Till now I also consider the moon as female, but just for the knowledge I searched it on the wiki and what I found...there are both types of lunar god available (male/female) according to different religions and mythology...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lunar_deities

Thank you for asking ...today I learn something new :D

There have been enough manned and unmanned probes sent to the moon over the past 50-plus years that you'd think they would have figured that one out by now...

Nothing is allowed to be male or female these days... It's just a "Them." :|

That's the ticket. The Moon's gender is culturally defined and is arbitrary. :)

There's a problem word.... "soulless". It is equally as problematic as "soul".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul

The idea of a personal eternal soul substance is, to me incoherent. No one can point to an example.
The idea of a phenomenal person that can play or sing a soulful piece of music is not incoherent. One can point to Billy Holiday.

Cold-hearted Orb, that rules the night, removes the colors from our sight, Red is grey, and yellow white, but we decide which is right, and which is an illusion.....
(One of my favorite tunes from these guys...) The Moody Blues, for those too young to know really good music...
Cheers

This is a fun thread.

A soulless, barren, cold...it almost sounds like a human being.

If we remove the word soulless, or soul from our vocabulary here we then have barren and cold...still sounds like a human being. 😊

And as to a "cultural" definition of gender...please...

It is amazingly entertaining how we can have such discussion...a group of old guys argueing the gender of the moon. 😊

I love it.
Thank you Refractordude for this entertaining thread.

Now let me go to wiki and find out what my gender is this week. 😊

There is no denying that the gender of the Moon in different languages and cultures is different. So "YES!" please. Many ideas are culturally defined. Many cultures have more than 2 genders. German and Latin (ancient Roman) have 3. Persian and Hungarian are gender neutral.

My nickel's worth. Many of the ancients saw Luna as female and Sol (the Sun) as male. It's understandable given the "natural" patriarchy which existed among the earliest civilizations and peoples. I'm not sure what the mythical Amazonian civilization thought with respect to their own anthropomorphizing of the celestial realm.

Now I'm going to read other members' comments. I didn't want to prejudice my response before posting. Heh!

BTW, refusing to allow myself to be bullied by reckless and way over-politicized "new agey" FEELINGS … I've always applied Occam's Razor to the question of biological genders. I think the human genome speaks very loudly about the reality of what constitutes actual biological genders as it relates to the human race. Plus I believe there's only one human race … Homo Sapien - another question which lends itself well to Occam's Razor. However, there are many people, tongues, tribes, and nations which are the real source of never ending conflicts among greater humanity. And I believe the sad reality is is we all have far more in common than we have in differences. Like it's long been said for the last couple of hundred years of western civilization, the devil is in the details … generically speaking, of course, and not making any tangential reference to Halloween! Heh!

Just sayin'.

Hopelessly old school and an ol' "dog",
Hank

I agree completely nFA. 😊

This has been an entertaining and instructive thread, a highlight of my morning and afternoon under a cloud laden sky.

My comments are along the lines of entertainment as we "argue" over the gender of the moon.
If only we had an icon for "tongue-in-cheek"

Thank you.

Moon masculine or feminine

You'll get the answer at the Brenner pass in the Alps.
North of Brenner, it is the der Mond, pronounce hard in low key
South of Brenner it is the la luna, pronounce soft and melodically

And to pass the Brenner with your car from the masculine Moonshine to the feminine Moonshine, the toll costs 9.50 EUR

Best,
