Celestron NexStar 130 SLT

#1

Post by Graeme1858 »

Inspired by Mark's "My garbage find/possible new project" I need to ask, what do we all think of this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/196340771709 ... rMEALw_wcB

A Celestron NexStar 130 SLT 130mm f/5 Reflector with a broken tripod for £150 for a grab and go.

I could probably fix the tripod or I have a spare CGX tripod I could probably make an adapter plate for.

Tempting!

Graeme

I know I'd be tempted; get some tube rings and use your CGX; or even make a dob base.

This is my old Tasco 114mm 12-TE that I made a base for. Doesn't have to be pretty, just functional!

The 130 SLT was my starter scope. I saw 93 Messier’s from my light polluted backyard with this scope.
Still take it out for a spin every now and then.
With the Celestron wifi dongle, I do goto’s with my phone.
Very shaky mount for sure. Looks like you could patch it up and use it?
Probably the last 15 Messier’s that I observed with the tube was on my old AVX mount which was so much more stable.
The 5” newt can provide some nice views for sure.
I tried to modify the mirror position so that I could reach focus with my dslr, but the results weren't great.
For imaging, I would pass, but for inexpensive viewing, yes.

Hi Graeme,

Since that auction is an or "Best Offer", I would offer him £100 and see if he takes it. If not, go up to 125 lbs and see if he takes it. You'd be surprised that when somebody says "this item is broken" people stay away from it which means you can usually talk them down in price.

It's a deal that I would go after if I could get it for slightly less, good luck.

Cheers,
