Pons-Brooks in RFT

#1

Post by sdbodin »

Observed comet Pons-Brooks in my 4 inch RFT last evening. Scope; homemade 4 inch RFT with WWII optics, Kodak aerial camera 4 element design 24 inch focal length, f6, Sherman tank eyepiece, 1.5 inch Erfle design, 16x at 68 deg Afov, 4.25 deg true field.

Conditions only marginal with hi-cirrus clouds approaching from the west and maybe interfering, hard to tell. Plus, twilight present almost until the comet set. Tail not visible at first, sky brightness had to fade, Tail progressively came into view up to a maximum, estimated, 2 degrees, half my fov. Nucleus more distinct than seen in my 11x70 binos, seemed star like, but faded in and out, coma not overly large.

Probably my last chance at it since twilight gathers steam at my latitude this time of year and will overwhelm the faintness of this comet shortly.

Clear skies,
Steve
Scopes; Meade 16 LX200, AT80LE, plus bunch just sitting around gathering dust

Nice observations Steve, sounds like an interesting scope you have pieced together...
