What are some of the geekiest things you own?

#1

Post by Chich »

Way back in the before times on astronomy.net I asked this and people seemed to enjoy it so I'll ask it again here :)

What are some of the geekiest (nerdiest?) things you own?

I have curio cabinet and amongst the treasures are: a staff Compass, replica Australopithecus skull and tyrannosaurus tooth, and a piece of Dillithium crystal from TOS.

Well, besides all my scopes, especially the dedicated Solar ones...

I'm not really a collector per se; I have a couple of meteorite fragment but they were gifted to me. I'd have to say the "geekiest" things I own are up my left arm...

First off, my daughter and I started playing Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube back in 2010 when she was 5. We finished the game just after her 6th birthday; so many good memories with that. RE4 is the most playable game ever, we were entertained for years with all the extra unlocked from completing it. Last year for her 18th birthday, we bought the new remake for the Xbox. A week later, I got a tattoo of the "Los Illuminados" (The Enlightened Ones) symbol seen throughout the game. She came with me to watch me getting it done.
The saga and memories continue.... ;)

RE.JPG

And the other most geekiest thing... If you're wondering what that is just above my tattoo, it's the magnetometer boom from the second one. Voyager 1 or 2 (take your pick); it's a tribute to my father who got me into astronomy, and who died suddenly on August 28, 1977; right between the launches of Voyagers 2 and 1. He would have been fascinated with all of their discoveries; I wish we could have shared all that.

I guess my memories and life experiences make me a geek  So be it; I'm happy and content with who I am!

Thanks Chich and all the best,
Mark

I've got five LEDs on a breadboard connected to an Arduino and a DHT11 sensor in the observatory (red of course) that I can see the temperature in binary from the security camera.

Plan A was to use a servo to rotate a pointer against a scale but that was hard to see and it wasn't geeky enough!

For temperatures below 0°C or above 31°C I look at the Serial Monitor through TeamViewer.

The telesopes and the HHR for sure, but worse yet the telescopes in the HHR 😄

An old car thats a reincarnation of an even older car 😆

Mine is actually in mint condition with low miles though and stored in a climate controlled garage, adding nicely to the fullon obbsessive nerdom that is Me...

There is more but there may be some here not fully ready to handle the whole Nerd truth.

So for them we spot here...

From my brain at 06:30, the geekiest thing I have right now is the crazy half :)
Pretty much all of my geeky things I had went with the downsizing before the move...

My place is like Geek Central, so I'll just list the Geeky toys. My observatory and warm room are decorated in Sci-Fi. The bunk has a Star Trek cover. I have light and sound replicas of the TARDIS and Enterprise. Hanging from the ceiling a small x-wing and tie fighter are in a dogfight. My walls of astronomy pictures also contain Leonard Nimoy. Outside there are dedicated parking places and signs for Federation ships, astronomers, and Tardises. There is a "no Trespassing sign warning that the premises are protected by Daleks. And tiny green aliens are everywhere.

Not sure whether it counts as 'geeky', but I have a weather station on my desktop at home (in the home office), which uses a mouse recorder script to 'manually' download data to a CSV file to a network file server every 30 minutes, so that I can view the data for any day in the last month on my Excel dashboard on the 'every day' laptop.

So that the data is equally available when I'm away from home, I have a task schedule to run another script to copy it to a Dropbox sync folder.

Lots of nice Excel dinks used to show the data in different ways, and Macros (of course) to make things happen.
