NGC 4731 is a Seyfert 2 galaxy about 84 million light years distant (redshift est). It has a companion galaxy
NGC 4731A (also known as Holmberg 472B - 472A is the main NGC4731). The companion 4731A is about 85 million light years (redshift est).
The upper right corner has the smaller galaxies IC3812, LEDA 1029635, LEDA 1029569 (from the top down). IC3812's distance is about 172 million light years (redshift est), The other two don't have a distance estimate. There are many background galaxies in this image as well that are best seen in the full size image.
The image below is a crop of
NGC 4731 from the full field - it links to the main page with image and information. There is also a link below to the full
FOV and annotated image. The full resolution image has a horizontal
FOV of 0.656 degrees and an image scale of about 0.492 arcsec/pixel.
Full disclosure - This is an LRB image. Operator error with
NINA caused what I wanted to be my green subs to be shot with my red filter. I ended up making a synthetic green (from red and blue); ran it through
PI's SPCC and resolved the color as best I could. (SPCC ran with pretty tight regression line spreads.) The resulting image compared reasonably well with other images on line as far as star and galaxy color.
