A crappy March 12/24 Sun in W/L

Post by Thefatkitty »

Hi everyone, hope all is well.

I left for work this AM at 5:30 to pretty clear and cold skies; it was -2C (30F) according to my truck. Orion was setting low in the west, spring is here.

I got in at 2PM, and my truck now informed me it was 17C (63F) outside. It was actually a lot warmer; I was in a T-shirt. This is why I dress in layers :D

I'm also having a few issues with my camera for my Ca-K setup, but I thought to give my white light setup a whirl. This is what I'll be using for the eclipse, skies permitting. It's nothing new to me, I've been using this setup since 2016.

I really didn't expect much. Either that or I'm a sucker for punishment. These were my skies after I set up:

I use Baader 3.8OD film, with a Baader Solar Continuum and UV/IR cut behind that in the camera. Ususally I shoot the Sun with this setup at ISO 800 and 1/1600th sec exp, and I took 150 shots with that. Seemed a bit bright, so I lowered the exposure to 1/1250 and took 90 shots before the haze thickened up. It turned out those were the best; the 1/1600 wouldn't even stack  Still, the fact that I got what I did amazes me.

The best 20% of the 90 in PIPP and AS3, no post processing (why kill it more) and scaled with the planets in PSP9. AR3600 is to the right, and the two spots off to the left are as yet un-numbered.

Quiet day for the Sun, I hope something comes around soon!

Clearer skies to you all, and all the best :D

Nice one through the haze Mark.

He's become a little quiet after the flurry of sunspots recently.

Layers is the way to go in topsy turvy weather, also when you're taking Tamsulosin! 😀
