OhMyGod I Dropped My Barlow Into the Mud!!!
This is right up there with the sneezing. 
Binoculars; Celestron Skymaster 18-40 X 80 zoom, Bushnell7-15 X 35 zoom, a couple of older single speed Bushnells that ride around in the car for weather spotting clarification
Scopes; Tiny little Mak-Cass Celestron c90 spotter scope that lets me count the moons of Jupiter and with which I can see Saturns rings in Mickey Mouse phase
Old Meade 1000mm f/11 that was missing the finder scope and ring so I rigged one onto the barrel using duct tape and a bit of cardboard and that actually works and I can count the moons of Jupiter with this one too.
Meade 6" reflector,(really elderly), found at a yard sale, the tube is a bucket of rust and corroded mirror but the mount and tripod will be recoverable so hooray for that.
Cameras; Mamiya medium format 645 with a couple of polaroid backs and a series of wide angle to 50mm lenses
Konica-Minolta 35mm,Sony alpha dslr's, up to the a900 full frame, mostly got them used because I don't have much money.

I hope it's ok. Not as bad as letting your 10" dob OTA roll off the couch and onto the hardwood floor with a crash which I did. Amazingly it did not lose collimation.

If it has a removable lens cell just rinse the tube separately under running water.
Put the lens in some water (on its side) so that the mud will slide off the glass more naturally.

I dropped my hand grenade(aka 31mm Nagler) from the top of a 2 metre aluminium ladder. It landed on the bottom step of the ladder. Fortunately it didn't seem to suffer any damage.
Mud is easily cleaned using the method Gabby described. I would also just rinse the lens in running water rather than standing it it water where it might soak in between the elements. Just make sure it is thoroughly dried before reassembly.

Successfully cleaned up with no scratches on the lens.
OF COURSE it fell lens-end into the mud because that's the heavy end. But it only caught the edge and kind of stuck that way so I was able to pluck it without the entire lens getting mud.
Use of the flashlight to find it thoroughly killed my night-eyes dilation so it was a somewhat early end to the session on one of our rather rare clear nights.
I have made sure that I am having MORE THAN ONE of the all-important Barlows in my lens quiver.
Thank you very much for advice on the cleaning.
...and the sense that I am not alone.

My condolences. Ultimately, there are only two practical solutions to this problem: (1) Don't drop the Barlow lens in the mud, and (2) be rich enough that you can buy a new one, when you do. All in all, it's like that old SNL skit, "Be Attractive, Don't Be Unattractive." Yup.
