One of my eclipse chasing acquaintances did that when he was an air force fighter pilot. Perhaps 1979?

I wanted to do that for the 1979 eclipse when I was flying out of Moose Jaw, SK. Unfortunately, the air force sent me to Montreal on a french language course at the time. The CT-114 was subsonic, so the best I could have done might have been to add a few extra seconds to totality, but it would have been fun to try. Or at least I would have gotten above any clouds if there had been any. I was so disappointed at missing the eclipse that I never even asked if it had been a clear day.
