Put XLS as attachement on 1st post - can't change

#1

Post by Ben Cartwright SASS »

I added an XLS file to my post in the EAA Messier Challenge and now have added a few more Messiers to the excel spreadsheet and I want to replace the attachment in the first post.

It won't let me edit the post (maybe because it has been answered, i.e. another post in the thread)

so I added a new post with the updated spreadsheet. There must be a way to replace the original spreadsheet?

It might be better to use a Google Sheet if that's an option for you. That way, anytime someone opens it, it is retrieved from the online source and can be continuously updated.
Here's a test. I am going to post my regular Messier list, not EAA, here and see if I can edit it and then open it from this original link.

It does seem to work. I posted the link, then went back into it and edited a line, it will be obvious if you look at the link.
The only issue I see is if others opening the link have edit ability? Try adding a line of text to my Sheet. Don't worry, it's just a test file.

I figured out how to protect the Google Sheet so others cannot edit it.
Go to DATA/Protect Sheets & Ranges
Select the cells you want to protect, in my case A1-K127
Image
Then set permission to "Only You"

The only option I see for using Microsoft Excel would be to store the spreadsheet to an online drive like Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive and link to it.
Then just remember to update that file from the online drive.

Once you have decided which direction you want to go, either Google Sheets or an Excel spreedsheet stored online, post a new link to that file and one of the Mods or Admins can edit your original post and fix it.

When you attach a spreadsheet in a post you're attaching a copy of the one on your local drive. You can work on the spreadsheet on your local drive, save it and post another instance of it in another post.

Greg's response will probably work better though because you won't end up with loads of different versions of the same file!

Graeme
I set up a spreadsheet in Google drive using Google sheets, I already use them for my phone and internet site list.

How do I notify the admins to take my most recent post with the link to the spreadsheet and updated text description and have them replace my original post with it and delete the link in my second post

If you are using Google Sheets, you do not need to put a copy in Google Drive. Google Sheets is already stored on Google's servers.
Just open the Sheet and go to File/Share/Share With Others
Select General Access/Anyone With A Link
Then copy that link to a new post on your EAA page and I or one of the other mods will edit your original post with that link.
Reply here when you have done that then I will edit your EAA post.

I edited your EAA post to show the Google Sheets doc now instead of the Excel spreadsheet attachment.
