Friends of the lake are trying to encourage business and homes to switch off the lights and see the stars above your head.
Great initiative, needs to start spreading worldwide!

In Australia, we have something called "Earth Hour" each year. Promoted by WWF - Australia, a long campaign of fundraising takes place for about 2 months leading up to Earth hour on a Saturday night close to the equinox each March, when people everywhere are encouraged to turn off all lights.

https://www.earthhour.org.au/

When I lived in Canberra, I couldn't notice any difference in sky brightness during Earth hour and reports I've read from astronomers from other large cities are similar. This year it's on March 23, just 2 days before full moon.

I'll be interested to see how the Cumbria experiment works. At least they are doing it near new moon.

cheers

Joe

Here in South Africa Earth hour is only lip service.

Thanks to gubbermint initiated blackouts we have our lights turned of daily. So most South Africans will probably scoff at the idea of turning the lights off on purpose!
When my zone is turned off I see no visible difference, might take a LOT more nieghbourhoods around me to have any impact.

Let's hope it gets noticed and catches on.

We have a Governmental Group looking after light pollution in the UK but you don't hear from them much. Probably more the media's fault then theirs.

I am sitting in darkness now. Self imposed blackout. My electricity provider is offering a $10 discount off the next power bill, if I can use less than 1.4 KWhr over a 2 hrs period tonight. They have many of these opt in power saving challenges.
