New Image: Another meteor capture...

Post by AstroBee »

I finally managed to get my enclosure built and installed on my balcony for my All Sky camera. Last night was the first full evening of letting it run fully automated. It's set to run on autopilot from 30 minutes prior to sunset till 30 minutes after sunrise. After it gets dark, you might notice what appears to be clouds in the lower section of the video. It's not! Those are reflections on my dome from my neighbor's Christmas house lights. I live next door to the Grizwalds! :o Fortunately for me, they are on a timer and turn off some time between midnight and 1am.
I woke up this morning to a completed timelapse video, star trails image and meteor detection folder of possible meteor images. The AllSkEye software is really impressive! https://allskeye.com/
There were lots of false positives in the meteor folder because of satellites and aircraft traffic over my home, but sifting through a folder of 50-75 images is much easier than sifting through every single image from the entire night!
First, the meteor image.

Then the star trails image.

And finally, the timelapse video. If you want to see the meteor in the video, it's best to examine the still image first. Note its position in the frame and the relative position of a nearby bright star. That helps to narrow down the rough time in the video and then you know where to look. don't blink, it's only on screen for 1/30 second!
It's also kinda cool to see Venus and the crescent moon rise just before daylight.

These all sky cameras seem great! I'm limited to a DSLR on a timer and pick up odd ones from time to time. This year has been appallingly bad for weather, so I've caught very few this year.
