My experience of the Solar Eclipse

#1

Post by Shelby »

I had the honor of being able to experience today's solar eclipse. From my location, it was only a partial eclipse with about 75% coverage, but it was every bit worth looking at.

I could not have had much better weather for the occasion. There was not a single cloud to be found in the sky, and the temperature was nice. It was a little windy, but with my dobsonian mount, that was no issue at all.

I went and bought an AstroZap Baadar Film Solar Filter for the occasion after determining it was the the best choice for my budget, and it is a very good filter, much better than the one I had for my other telescope. It made the experience very great. I was able to get very clear crisp details of the eclipse and features on the Sun. It was a very enjoyable view.

I missed the first few minutes of the eclipse because I was busy at the time, but after that, I had only a few interruptions, but it did not spoil the event for me at all. After I finished setting up everything and got my scope pointed at the Sun, I was greeted with a great view of the eclipse as it was already partly underway. I continued watching and taking photos as it progressed slowly and more of the Sun became covered by the Moon.

Just a few minutes before the eclipse was at maximum, my dad showed up to watch with me, and he really enjoyed the moments of the eclipse as well. My sister was also looking occasionally at the eclipse and was able to join us for the maximum. We also used paper to project the image of the eclipse on a box to also experience it that way. It was very nice to be able to enjoy all of this together. We watched as the sunspots on the Sun disappeared behind the Moon as the eclipse continued to progress. My step-dad also joined us at the maximum.

Once the eclipse got to maximum coverage of 75%, the ground and sky were noticeably darker and the temperature was a little cooler as well. We looked around at the shadows under the trees and noticed how all of them were now in crescent shapes. It was very cool seeing all of this taking place. It is an experience that no one will forget.

After the maximum was over and the Moon started receding off of the Sun, we watched as the sky and ground got slowly brighter again, and the shadows turned slowly back to normal. We watched as the previously covered sunspots reappeared into view once again. Everything we saw at the start was now happening in reverse. It was very interesting seeing this part as well. My dad had to return home before last contact, but me and my sister continued watching until the last contact of the moon.

This was only the second solar eclipse I have ever seen. The first one was back in 2017, and that one was very similar to this one.

I have photos for everyone below. I hope you all enjoyed my report, because I had a lot of fun out there with family enjoying this rare event. Happy reading, everyone.

Great report Shelby. Since your dad enjoyed that so much, you should definitely ask your dad if he will take you on a road trip over the border into Texas to observe the total eclipse next April.

Depending what part of the state you live in. From the NW of the state, Shreveport, it could be as short as 200mi each way. If you live in NOLA then you're going to have to be a lot more convincing when you ask him.

Thanks for the report. Map of next April's eclipse below.

I do plan on traveling to see the total eclipse next year if possible. I will do my best to make it happen. Hoping that the weather is also nice then as well. I am in the SW region of Louisiana, so not super far away, but still far.

Shelby,

The best weather is in Mexico (Mazatlan). In Texas, the clearest weather is in the part of the path closest to the US/Mexico border.
