Hi Everyone,
The October quiz is now available.
You should find this much easier than last month.
I expect a suite of 80-100% scores.
Another more challenging quiz is already written for November.

Enjoy:

Got 60%. Would have got one more if l had read the question properly.

Assume this has to be done without looking anything up.

Fun quiz; thanks Joe! Got 80%; if I'd gone with my first thought on #6 it would've been 90

Good quiz, thanks.
Scored 90% but would dispute the answer that I missed. I think it's come up before, but I will stand by my answer..
Had to guess one, but it came good.

Thanks for putting this quiz together Joe!

I did 70%. Better than my average, but I was hoping for 80%. Never satisfied!

I have to translate certain questions sometimes, so I waste time, but I love this quiz.
Thank you very much for taking the time to do this.
ps: 70% in 4 minutes.

Didn't know 2 and guessed wrong on both!
Thought I knew 1 but didn't!

Writing quizzes sounds easy but actually can be quite hard.
But I'll be the one to nit-pick:

"According to myth, Crotus often went hunting on horseback and lived among the Muses, who requested that Zeus place him in the sky, where he is seen demonstrating archery.[5]"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagittari ... tellation)

"Stretching north from Betelgeuse are the stars that make up Orion's club. Mu Orionis marks the elbow, Nu and Xi mark the handle of the club, and Chi1 and Chi2 mark the end of the club. Just east of Chi1 is the Mira-type variable red giant U Orionis. ... In Greek mythology, Orion was a gigantic, supernaturally strong hunter,[27]"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_(constellation)

Which hunter with a weapon did you intend?

October Quiz Results

Saturday October 28th
The October quiz competitive scoring period is now over. If you haven't yet attempted the quiz, you can still do the quiz and get a score but your score won't be included in this monthly result summary. The November quiz is completed and will be released on Wednesday November 1.

This months easy quiz resulted in a bag of high scores. Nobody scored less than 60% and the midpoint for the group was 80%.
OCT 2023 RESULTS copy 2.jpg
Our two equal winners are BobHarmony(Bob) and GFamily.
Both scored 100% and both in two minutes.

The forum timer only measures to the nearest minute so I can't separate them. Bob, I hope you don't retire, otherwise we may need to pass this off as a fluke!

Contentious Questions

1. Some of you will note that your scores are 10% higher than your original scores. That is because I broadened the number of allowable correct answers on one contentious question during the month.

KT4HX(Alan) & GFamily both queried the question about the most common galaxy type. I had based my answer upon a NASA reference but it seems NASA are not a reliable source of information and I won't rely upon them as an authoritative single source in future. A survey of different sources variously quoted Dwarf, Elliptical and Spiral as the most common types. So I changed the answer key to make all three correct and I manually corrected the scores of those who did the quiz before I changed the answer key because the recorded scoring doesn't apply corrections to scores retrospectively.

2. Sparweb pointed out that Sagittarius was also a hunter with weapons. He did this in a post on this thread early in the month potentially spoiling the quiz for others, so I hid his post. His post is now visible again. Again, I ask that if you have a comment that potentially acts as a spoiler do not post it publicly during the quiz period(the current month), rather send me a PM or else wait until the end of the month when the quiz is closed then you can post whatever you want.

However, in this case, I think it's pretty common knowledge that Orion is a hunter with multiple weapons. Sparweb's interpretation shows an excellent knowledge of Greek mythology but Sagittarius is a centaur who hunts and only has one weapon. Everybody else answered Orion and I decided it was unreasonable to change the answer marking everybody else wrong when the answer was reasonably obvious. You can read Sparweb's post here: viewtopic.php?t=32130&p=255075#p255075
