Sunspots

The weather had been cloudy for a while. It cleared enough, for a brief period, to allow me to see three sunspots through my binoculars and filters. I guessed I had to be grateful for that little nugget of activity.

Good catch Phil.

How do you produce the sketch?

I observe the sunspots using my 15x70 binoculars with Baader white light filters made from A4 sheet. I draw a circle on paper or card and plot the sizes, positions and shapes of the sunspots

I use Powerpoint (comes with Microsoft Office). I originally used a blank and drew sunspots on top. I now use the previous drawing and move and change the shape of the sunspots. I copy to GIMP and export to JPEG.

I use this method when it is cloudy but clear enough to make out sunspots or when I am busy and only have time for a quick shot.

Using my Mak and DSLR is much better but I don't always get clear sky at the right time to do it.

Sounds like a good system Phil.

I've got a white light filter that fits over my binoculars, I might copy your method and see what I get!
