Hi

I have been an amature observer for about 10 years, recently got into astrophotography. Using this forum quite a bit. I have an 8" celestron sct, using a dslr currently to capture the planets. Looking to move into deep space and improve my processing skills. Using APT , regi and gimp.

It's great to hear that you've been observing for about 10 years because that means you obviously have a decent understanding of the sky and your scope. I can't tell from the photo if the scope is an AltAz mount or on an Eq mount? If AltAz, that is going to severely limit your ability to do deep-sky imaging due to something called field rotation. As the scope tracks an object across the sky it will rotate in the field because the mount is making tiny up/down, left/right movements to track the object. That will not prevent you from being able to do excellent Lunar and decent planetary imaging though as those are done by taking short video clips and then using software to stack the best frames. You could also do some short exposure deep-sky imaging on the very brightest objects. You will just be limited to your individual exposure times of only a few seconds. Stacking many, many images will be the key.

I've been doing plenty of reading through the forums I'll see how I get on with the planets before I make the plunge to eq, I'll need to upgrade some of my gear too, camera, filter wheel, autofocuser etc..spare time!!, let's see. I'm tapped out about mag 5 from where I view in a city, how bad would this effect imaging deep sky objects?
