I would just use the Luminance filter, then 'colorize' it in Photoshop or Gimp.

Graeme , I have had good results using a Variable ploarizing filter mounted to the camera . White light filters are often very bright and can take a camera's exposure control to the limits , the variable polarizer acts like an adjustable dimmer and will reduce the brightness .
