A close up view of The Elephant Trunk, mosaic in RGB

#1

Post by petershah »

I've been working on this the whole weekend, I just love the range of colour in this object. Its a three panel mosaic of IC1396 The Elephant Trunk Nebula.  Imaged with the 16in ODK and ASI2600 remotely from Spain.........Imaged at 1x1 then software binned 2x2...Exposure time was only 40mins in each RGB channel for each panel, all 60s unguided on The DDM85.

Image

Here is a short video I did showing the setup just after rebuilding it

Thanks for looking

Hi Peter,

Beautiful work!
I love the range of color and I also love the range of reds!
That is certainly an image to be proud of!
Your equipment setup is amazing.

Thank you... it was a bit of a task to sort out but worth it in the end...In fact I love this scope over the 17in Planewave if I'm honest...The Planewave I have set up with a CCD and as good as that is the Cmos is so much better..

thank you both
I am really please with the way its turned out....was just comparing it to one I took a few years back with my 12in and H35...I know its not a completely fair comparison but it does show how the techniques have moved on

Nice comparison, a number of years past I did eaa shots with a 25mm lens of the MilkeyWay and thought it was so cool to discover all these nebula all over the place.

That was well before my online astroing started so I have about ten years of liking or not astro images online, and agree...Stars are tighter, difraction spikes are less prominent and way less noise with better colourizing flatter images and ever fainter targets turning up.

Have an awesome week Peter!

Peter,

Thanks for posting the comparison image to your previous work. I followed the link on AB.
Your previous image (2018) is outstanding. The details are superb. Your latest version just blows it away! The details in the lower part of the trunk (well, of course the whole trunk) are just amazing.
Very well done Peter!

Thank you....

putting the difference in scopes to one side I think the main reason is to do with the progress in the software development and techniques combined with latest generation camera technology....it really has moved imaging along recently....the difficult part is to break to habit of the older CCD way of thinking when acquiring the data...

I have a very clever friend who is doing some testing on one of the scopes at the moment on exposure lengths and s/n ... there is a lot to do with it yet but the early indications are that 0.9hrs worth in 30s subs on this one scope is equivalent to 3hrs of 180s subs on the same scope.... like I say early days on this but it shows that you have to treat Cmos very differently to CCD or it can actually have a negative impact....I mean that is significant...I knew that it was the case but not to that extent.... I am waiting on his final conclusion

Thanks for the background information.

Never used CCD, but I would imagine there is a big diff ( as you referred to

You sure have a good friend!

Thanks and take care Peter!
