Ca-K Sun June 22/23

Post by Thefatkitty »

Hi all, yay it's Friday!

Yesterday I got in to cloudy skies at about 2PM. My wife got in 2 hours later, and I took a look outside. Very clear, though it was a window literally, slow moving clouds in every direction.

In the half hour I had, I managed to get some pics of the Sun in Calcium-K. I used my WO61mm at f/5.9 and my C80-HD at f/11.4. I use the new CMOS Ca-K filter from Baader.

I took 2000 frames with my ZWO ASI174 mono camera for each scope and stacked the best 10%. A bit of ImPPG, and at least with the 61mm, adding the planets to scale. I colorized the image for effect to show the wavelength that Ca-K shows up in. Honestly, I prefer the monochrome one; what do you think?

And this is with the 80mm; unlike my white-light pics taken with a DSLR through this scope, I have to use a diagonal to bring the ZWO to focus. That magnifies the image, so instead of a full disc it's cropped a bit. So be it for now.

I do prefer the longer f/l of the 80mm, even thought the C80-HD is an achro and not ED glass like the 61mm.

I'd need extension tubes to be able to not use the diagonal and get a full image... I might have a solution for that tomorrow. It involves the focuser from an old Jason 80mm at f/15 that unfortunately has a "soft" objective. I have a Skywatcher EQ5 that needs some attention as well.

Rain forcasted for the next bit; that's OK. I need sleep and some rest/relaxation and just to tinker with all this over the weekend. Me time, down time; call it what you will. It'll be a good time :D

All the best,
Mark

Good images Mark. The colourised version gives that little bit extra wavelength data indication. I think I prefer it.

Enjoy your down time!
