Paid off mortgage. Finally!

Today I made the LAST payment on my house. 30 year mortgage. Where did the time go? Maybe now I'll put some money aside and build myself a little observatory!

We did something like that. When my last child graduated from college we called a family council. I told the kids I loved them, but we were cutting them off. We got the house paid off and used the money we normally spent on mortgage and college to help prepare for retirement. We were already accustomed to living without that money. About a year before I retired I dumped some money into my observatory and astronomy equipment. The idea was that if I spent it while I could afford it I could use the equipment for several years into retirement for almost free.

We managed to get ours paid off a year or two before I retired. I was in to do a final renewal and asked how much to just pay it off. Did some figuring and did it. The bank account took a hit but it saved a chunk o' change. The extra money we had each month from being free of the payments was nice too,
