Outreach at a Funeral?
I attended a funeral yesterday and the Funeral Home Director asked if I minded if he set a lady next to me. After taking her seat she leaned over and said that she had never met me, but she knew who I was. It turned out that she had been hearing mutual friends talk about being invited to observing nights with my telescopes. She wondered if she could come out sometime. She wanted to look through a telescope. She had always wanted to see Saturn's rings, but had never seen them.
I told her it was the wrong time of year for Saturn, unless she wanted to get up before dawn. She didn't care what we looked at. She had been thinking about making a trip somewhere to visit an observatory. We scheduled a viewing night on June 1 or 2. Venus should be half illuminated, Mars will be in the beehive cluster, and we will have a full moon. Full moons are not prime time for observing, but if you slow the slewing rate and pump up the power you can let a first time viewer slowly scan what they want to see. Guests also won't run into as many things in the dark.
So, I guess I'm going to host another open viewing night before long.

Re: Outreach at a Funeral?
As Michael said Rob, what a pleasant surprise to meet an astronomy referral in the most unlikely of places.
I hope all goes well for you and the lady in question.

I always love the reaction that you get when someone sees the moon or a planet for the first time !
It’s usually something like Holy

Gee if I had known there was so much to see I would have started decades ago !
