Had a bit of fun yesterday (Sunday). It was fairly clear; not much in the way of sunspots, but I wanted to try my WO 61mm on my CG4. I made a solar filter for it, used the sun-finder from my 80mm, and a "mount" to fit the scope to said CG4. I got this mount with my C80-HD so many years ago, and it's my workhorse for 7 scopes.

I do have a saddle mount for this scope, but that will require some welding/cutting/drilling. I'm tired from work; I cobbled a mount for it out of some old flatbar, a few washers and two skateboard wheel bearings. All I had to do was drill one hole.
Yes, I am a hick

My 60mm and 80mm mounted:

04.JPG
05.JPG

My sun-finder... I made that from a piece of 1-1/4" wide flatbar for the base, and welded an L-bracket to it. A piece of thick plastic and a long bolt finished that up. The base fits perfectly into the mounting slot, just tighten up one screw and it's good to go. It's dead centre for alignment. You can probably see how it works; just lose the shadow!

02a.JPG

The two scopes:

2scopes.JPG

And how did it work out? Well, the 60mm needs some focusing, and I really need to play with the camera settings/processing. This is the best I could get out of it at ISO 800 and 1/800th sec exp; 50 shots.

Sun_04_02_2023-60mm.jpg

My tried and true 80mm at ISO 800 and 1.200th sec exp, 50 shots as well.

Sun_04_02_2023-80mm.jpg

The 60mm is an APO doublet (I'd call it ED) at f/5.9 and the 80mm is an old achro at f/11.4. Just shows you don't need an expensive scope for white light :D

Ok, thanks for reading and clear skies!

Hey all, well it would seem Baader is coming out with a new line of filters for ol' Sol. They've already come out with others; I ordered a UV/IR cut from David Astro a few months back and he sold me the new CMOS version of it for the same price as the old one. Now it seems I can't order a Calcium-K filter as they're between the old and the new.

However, one filter is available, the Baader Solar Continuum Filter (540nm) - New 7.5nm Version. I have a SC filter, but it's in the 10nm range. Telescopes Canada had one left in 1.25" size, so you know what I did...

It was exactly $133 CAD with tax, and shipping (all next business day) was anywhere from $12.63 to just over $99. I went the cheap route!

I'm more curious than anything. I want to try this with my C80-HD with the 5.0 film as I do now. The SC filter is screwed into the UV/IR which is screwed into the nose piece/T-ring of my EOS550D (T2i). A few sunny days are forecast for this week, hopefully I can give this a try. Will there be a difference I wonder, especially with a DSLR?

@Solsearcher, thanks for the PM and yes, that works for sure:D I'll get back to you hopefully tonight, at the latest tomorrow; must make dinner now.

Have a good night all!
Mark

Got in from work today, and was sitting with Sarah on the couch when the needy feline creature decided she wanted some attention. After a few minutes of that, there was a knock on the front door, Sarah got it, and brought in my parcel from Telescopes Canada. I knew what it was, yet I'm not opening it now with the sheddy furball on me.

Image01.jpg

The new Baader Solar Continuum filter. The one I bought almost two years ago on the left, and the new one on the right. From 10nm bandpass to 7.5, and for less money even! I'm curious to see how the two compare, both visually and photographically.

Image02.jpg

I'm getting a collection of these; at least they're stackable...

Image03.jpg

I'm also toying with the idea of buying a ZWO ASI290 Mono Camera; you don't need colour for the Sun; at least in white light. My DSLR is great, but I have to think the CMOS camera's are just that much better. I'm also looking at a HA scope; would this suffice for that too?

Any recommendations on this choice of camera would be greatly appreciated before I pull the trigger... ;)
