Observing Report for Tuesday, March 28, 2023
My niece wanted me to show her the five planets.
5:00pm I opened the observatory, turned on the heat in the warm room, and started a small campfire. The clouds were beginning to thin.
7:00pm My niece joined me to hunt for the planets. The first and easiest was Venus. We used my C11 with a 40mm eyepiece. I used a red filter to darken the sky and increase contrast. There wasn't much to look at, but my niece was excited to see it in daylight. She used her cell phone to capture all the five planets.
7:22pm Sunset
7:30pm Just after sunset we also located Jupiter. A few minutes later we finally located Mercury. Jupiter and Mercury were the most difficult. I wasn't sure f we would capture them.
8:00pm One of my friends came over with his wife. So we set up the lawn chairs and talked while we roasted marshmallows. It was between 8:00 and 10:00 that we located Uranus an Mars.
10:20pm Everyone started for home. I was glad I turned the heat on in the warm room. My niece got pretty cold before it was over.
10:30pm Everyone was gone. I stayed for the night. I didn't do much. I put a few things away, shut down the observatory, read an article the various methods people have used to identify double stars, and got good night's sleep.
All in all, it was a good night.

Hi Rob. It looks like you had a wonderful observing session using your C11 telescope with your niece and joined later with your friends. It looks like a good time was had by all and the roasted marshmallows really capped off a great outing. Thanks for your well written report Rob, you did a great outreach service for the astronomy hobby, and congratulations on receiving the TSS VROD Award today.

Nice report of your telescopic wanderings with your niece. Seeing the five planets with the C11 must have been very rewarding, particularly because you were able to share the views. Congrats Rob in winning today's (3-30-2023) VROD award!
