Five Planets...Oh My!

There have been several times in the span of my "astronomical life" that I've pulled all nighters to catch all of the planets...so seeing five of them was no big deal. However, this afternoon my neighbor caught me outside, and we struck up a conversation about the five planets that would be visible tonight. Being a good neighbor...and expecting clear skies...I invited him over for the planetary tour.

Using just my Unitron (of course) 10x50 binoculars we first caught Venus shining brightly high in the sky right after sunset, then Mars also pretty bright west of the Moon. We had to wait awhile for the western sky to darken to catch Jupiter as it settled low into the horizon. Mercury was viewed next higher and to the right of Jupiter. At that point my neighbor had to depart, but I assured him once the sky darkened more, planet number five, Uranus, would soon be visible to the left of Venus.

I finally sighted Uranus at about 2020 hrs. That's all I have to say about that

Hi Dave. I am glad that you were able to observe the five planets. I didn't even get to take any space launch images yesterday afternoon as there were too many clouds to see anything, but I heard the rumble later while walking back inside with my camera. Thanks for your fun read report Dave and that was a nice outreach with your neighbor.

Good hunting Dave! For the last couple of evenings I had some clear sky and tried for Jupiter and Mercury, but they were obstructed by the skyline.
