What A Show!

#1

Post by JayTee »

I got to witness a great concurrence of events last night. I got reports from Aurora Pro that the Kp index was getting much higher and there was a 9% chance I would see some auroral display. I take these notifications with a grain of salt because I just don't get clear nights during the winter up here. BUT last night proved to be the exception: between 7 PM and 1 AM, I had mostly clear skies and got to witness the best aurora display since I was in Fairbanks Alaska in December of 93.

My northern sky up to about 35° of Alt lit up and was filled with the green curtain clouds of the aurora borealis. It was transfixing. The display lacks the color you see in the images but the color is there nonetheless. Differing intensities of green can be made out. Think of it as gray-green where the amount of gray varies in that green curtain revealing or covering up that beautiful green hue. Additionally, what made last night even more spectacular was the red that was also visible above the green clouds. The red shows up as vertically streaking stripes that are most definitely red. Just amazing.

The notifications on your smartphone tend to fill you with a sense of urgency because you just don't know what is going to be, or is already, visible. This sense of urgency can cause you to not dress appropriately for the outside conditions: as was the case last night! Sweat pants, fuzzy slippers, and a medium-weight jacket standing in 4" of fresh snow are really not quite enough insulation to brave the mid 20°s F temps of last night. Oh, did I mention the wind, not enough to affect the image, but enough to make you really wish it would stop! The result of this lack of preparation tends to drive you back indoors where it's much warmer. The flip side of this is that you stay outside and say, "Ok, this the is last image I'm taking!" 22 times!

The images turned out great and this just-out-your-front-door adventure will be a lifetime memory.

The images are posted here: viewtopic.php?t=29571

Notice the "lonely" Rimrock Observatory in the image!
