Lunt LS50 ha

#1

Post by LDW47 »

Just set it up this morning, my newly arrived Lunt ha scope. Now for the sun that has hardly been seen for the last month. A couple of test runs and I will put my LS40 up for sale. There is nothing wrong with it, its a great, capable scope for ha as well.

For the most part I am visual, the finding / tracking is as good as it gets, puts the sun almost dead centre every time. The tripod causes no problems to this point. I bought it at Telescopes Canada about a year ago. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

Just watch the weight of your scope, ep etc.vs the weight rating of the mount, to my mind the 85 would probably be the max for max performance. I have used my 90mm refractor with a 2" solar WL wedge and zoom ep on it at about 8lb with no discernable problems. If yours works as good as mine does you won't regret it.

They give the weight capacity of 11lb so for visual you will probably be just OK at 9lb unless you are thinking real high power solar imaging.

Hi Ldw477,
since I read your post I wonder if I should buy a 50 mm like you.
I found a new one at a good price.
I was wondering how you find the helical focuser?
thx .

The problem I can see with the 60 which I would love to have because of the upsize from the 50 is that it is not now a dedicated ha scope as is the 50, so you are partially paying for another nite time scope. I like the helical focuser, it performs well but I immediately ordered the crayford focuser ($320 US) for it which is on backorder until June / July and the case as well. The 50 has some great views so far, it takes some getting used to the pressure tuning from the tilt tuning but no problem. I will repeat again though there is nothing wrong with LS40 model for a lot less $'s, it is every bit as good as the 50 only with a bit less capabilities and now you can double stack it. I recommend either, I would stay with Lunt, their support / communications are excellent.

The other thing I note, that with the 50 vs the 40, you can use a bit higher range of eps when viewing.

Today the views are pretty good considering the fairly strong NE wind ! I was using my Celestron Ultima Edge 15-10mm eps and then I switched to my 12.5mm Baader Morpheus and they improved almost 100%, I may also go get my 9mm Morph. Just a fun outing in my backyard.

I really like my Lunt 50ha scope but I could easily hate the stock helix focuser, its not smooth, it only has one thumb screw holding the diagonal which allows the diagonal to move around while trying to focus. Now I know exactly why I immediately ordered the backordered crayford focuser ($320 US) when I bought the 50 and will hopefully get it in June-July. My LS40 had a helix as well but much more smoother when focusing. That 50 definitely needs 2 thumb screws in the focuser to hold the diagonal in place or spend $320 US, immediately !

Congrats on the new rig. I'm curious why the jump from 40mm to 50mm and not slightly larger like the 60 or 80? Besides the obvious, cost...

I only spend so much time on solar, what with all my other astro habits and etc. but I wanted to try pressure tuning. It was a big decision not to go with a 60 which would be the limit, That may be my next step if I live long enough, lol !
