Hello from SE Louisiana

#1

Post by NolaGal888 »

Hello to all. Long time interest in astronomy, but "life" continually got in the way. Now I want to try again. Will be looking for info on my old telescope - as in what to do with it, and recommendations on getting something more portable for our new RV travel lifestyle. Looking forward to finding my way around here and learning. It's never too late in life for that I believe.

Welcome to TSS!!!

Let us know what make and model that "old telescope" is. I'm sure someone here is familiar with it.

Thanks for the welcome! I made a post about my equipment in the beginners forum, and explained my dilemma about what to do with it. (Orion ShortTube 4.5" EQ. Tripod, AstroTrack motor, 2 eyepieces plus a 2x barlow and Collimation eyepiece, and a very nice padded case.) It is all old but in beautiful cosmetic condition. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get it collimated the last few times I tried, which was actually many years ago. I has been in the country with a friend for the past 6 yrs, hoping he could get it working but he did not. I just got it back. Even if I could get it working, it is no longer practical because we are now living an RV lifestyle and I prefer something more portable and lightweight.

Hi and Welcome Nola. We hope you enjoy it here. In lieu of the Orion Shortube you may want to think of an 80 mm refractor on an alt-azimuth mount. That would be more portable and very easy to set up and use and would not require any collimation.

You should look at a tabletop dob like this model. It's the same size scope as your current model but a very compact mount.

Hi Nola. It's great to have you join us here on TSS. Many of us have had to put the astronomy hobby on the back burner at one time due to jobs, moving, family, etc. And I agree with the above recommendations of a small short tube refractor or small Dobsonian mount reflector to get back into the astronomy hobby and still have the portability needed for use with an RV. Welcome to the forum Nola and the best of wishes on your next telescope purchase.

Hi again Nola. I was not sure what your astronomy observing preferences were earlier but I have now seen on another thread that you enjoyed your views of the moon and planets. So I am now offering another suggestion for you here, at:
https://www.amazon.com/Orion-10022-Tabl ... B002JO06PO
The Mak-Cass design has a long focal length and therefore a smaller field of view. But it has very sharp images for the moon and planets as well as splitting double stars nicely and it is very portable.
I hope this helps Nola and again a big welcome to the forum here.

I like the looks of that. Small, and the description you gave too. I do eventually want to get into looking more at the stars and Milky Way also. We have stayed in some places in the last couple of years where I have seen the MW (with naked eyes) like I had never seen it in my life.
