Phone & Celestron adaptor

#1

Post by Frankskywatcher »

I received a smart phone adapter for Christmas I know it’s a cheap one but it was so aggravating and frustrating trying to just line up the camera on the phone with the adapter.
I ran across this article and I am going to go thru it and hopefully get the adapter to work better.
If anyone else has that adapter is having a problem perhaps this article will help.

I have a smart phone adapter from Orion that does pretty well at aligning the camera, but haven't spent much time with it other than a couple of lunar images. Don't think I'll ever stray far from visual :icon-smile:

I haven't had much luck with them, but I don't have a lot of patience.

I just received this one, and it looks promising;

I bought this one first - junk.

Then I bought this one - much better. It's a huge advantage to be able to line up the phone camera directly on the adapter aperture and it tightens symmetrically around the eyepiece, so I'm never off-axis.

I do use part of the C-tron to hold my phone alone on a camera tripod for wide angle nightscapes. YMMV.

I think it's probably one of the better ones available right now. I particularly like that I can align the camera lens with the hole in the back of the adapter - no struggling to align properly. And the adapter can clamp down on different size EPs tops - works for an old straight Plossl as well as "mushroom tops".

I've only used it a couple times with 15x70 binos for star fields. The results weren't great but I had no tracking and my exposures were too long. I've not tried it with a scope / diagonal, but if the weather holds, I might try some moon shots one of these mornings with my 72ED. If anybody wants them, I can post measurements or close-up pics.

I've had no luck with this adapter, I bought it when I first started the journey over two years ago. It can't handle the weight of the newer and larger phones. I tried with a Samsung Note 20 Ultra, useless. Sad thing is it isn't really isn't one of cheaper ones. I got it because of three axis, I think that is it's downfall. The Z-axis is impossible to keep flat unless it's directly against the EP, or you use a truly light weight phone that has no real resolution, hence the Z-Axis is a gimmick. The statement on the web site
Works with virtually all smartphone models, including the latest devices from Apple, Samsung, and Google.
is a load, all IMHO.

Good luck with it.

Chris
