Filter question

#1

Post by dandva »

Hi all....question..I bought a used EP Filter which arrived today.....I noticed that the filter glass is a bit loose.....we have been socked in with clouds so can't test it...it fits beautifully on my eyepieces, looks in great condition......do any of you think the looseness will affect it..????? It's not falling out of the outer ring.....seller is willing to reimburse me if it doesn't work at all..

Any pre-testing ideas or comments are welcome...

Thank you.....Dan

It should not be a issue, look close at the ring holding the glass. Are there a couple of small notches in it?
If so use a small thin flat blade screwdriver and give it a gentle nudge/ push clockwise. The ring should tighten a bit and get rid of the rattle.
If there is no retaining ring then there will not be much that you can do but the filter should work fine anyways.
What type of filter is it?

Loose glass (providing it doesn't fall out) is glass that is not under stress. Glass that is retained by a tight mounting may show optical defects. Loose glass is ok providing it doesn't fall out.

Thank you Joe for your response....it seems quite secure, just a slight looseness but definitely not falling out....might get a couple hours of no clouds tonight so I'll be able to try it out...I'll take a look at it with my Loupe like Lady Fraktor mentioned....

Thanks you both.......Dan

If and when you do this, be careful! My meat paws, hands, scratched a $370 flattener when trying to tighten the retaining ring after it had worked loose and was causing some tilt in my images.

Honestly if it will function as it is, I'm not messing around with it...for the exact reason you stated....when I get to test it I'll be sure to put up a report on how it goes...appreciate the feedback....

Thanks...Dan

Got to test the loose filter for about an hour tonight......all is well......I. saw the Orion Nebula.....wow how cool......I'm not going to mess with the filter for fear of really screwing it up.....it's not falling out of the ring....works just fine as is....I'll just be real careful with it......my next step is to get a nice Eyepiece to replace the ones that came with the Telescope.
Want to Thank those who responded........I really appreciated it....

Happy Holidays to ALL......Dan
