December 2022 TSS Astro Quiz
In all these quizzes, text answers are case sensitive. I minimise the number of text answers and make most multiple choice and I try to allow for different ways people might express an answer. I allow for people to type all uppercase, all lowercase or capitalise the first letter only. No other combinations. eg if the answer is Rigel, you can answer RIGEL, rigel or Rigel but not mixed caps like RiGel.

I try not to have multiple word text answers to say identify a celestial object, eg an answer like, "The Orion Nebula," as words or designations, can have a stack of combinations - The Great Nebula in Orion, The Orion Nebula, Orion Nebula then multiple all of these with multiple upper/lower case combinations then add NGC and Messier designations with spaces, hyphens etc. To cover all possibilities even with just three case types + designations could end up having 20 or more possible forms of correct answers that have to be set. If you put an uppercase letter in the middle of the word it will be wrong and I can't cover all those permutations.

I originally said that I was going to do a themed quiz on Einstein, Black Holes, Relativity etc.

My thanks to @notFritzArgelander who proof read the Einstein quiz for me and pointed out quite a few problematic or ambiguous questions that will take some time to research and rewrite or replace with . Basically my memory & understanding of the special and general relativity units I took during my 3rd year Physics degree need a remedial refresher course.

The Einstein quiz will return next year after I take remedial relativity classes .

PS. When I first posted this announcement, I had not yet read of nFA's sad passing. I read the post immediately after posting this. Like many of you, I am saddened to hear of his passing and will miss his humour and vast knowledge. I now realise that he gave me his critique of the Einstein Quiz just over a week before he passed away

RIP not Fritz Argelander. We will miss you.
When I do fix the Einstein Quiz, it will, appropriately, be dedicated to his memory.

I got 14 out of 20. A little better than last months' quiz. Thanks for lightening it up a bit Joe. Admittedly I guessed on a couple and got them right.

Hmm, I got no points for the answer "No" to "Can you name this object?". It was the correct answer, for sure!

Otherwise, my score was that of a random walk because my factual knowledge is not nearly good enough for these quizzes. Taking the quiz at 3AM with a sleepy head did not help (I missed at least one easy answer because of that).

12/20 - can't really complain - though I would query the answer to the 5th question.

If we look at the local group of galaxies, we can see that dwarf galaxies outnumber the spirals, irregulars and ellipticals. I accept that we can't see more distant dwarf galaxies, but I don't think there's any good reason to expect them to be missing elsewhere in the universe. So I would say that dwarf galaxies would be the most common type.

10-14 points is scored by the vast majority of respondents in most of the quizzes I have posted and was also my average in most of the quizzes when Raymond Howard was setting the quiz.

I have taken on board the complaint that I was weighting hard questions so they were worth many more points than easy questions such that if you miss one or two of the harder questions, you lost a lot of points. I'll probably make all questions are going to be 1-2 points in future.

I wrote to Raymond to ask if he intended to resume the quizmaster duties and received no response.
Joe(BABOafrica) is slammed with work and I won't be able to post quizzes from March to June so if anyone is keen to have a go at this, please get in touch. Details of how to create the quiz forms will be given. It's pretty easy. No coding involved.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. I have absolutely no objection to this but could you tell me what you had in mind? I am not a moderator so I can't retitle the sub-forum. I can of course title the threads.

We of course have control of the title that appears on the quiz as this quiz is served via my google docs account or Babo's.
Hopefully, nobody will bust our chops if Babo or I occasionally forget if we are doing the quiz in a last minute rush.
