Bottle cap Diagonal on Orion Finder scope

#1

Post by planecrazzzy »

.
I bought an Orion 6" Newtonian...

It comes with a finder scope that is HARD to see through, it won't accept a diagonal...
For $100 , they'll sale you ANOTHER finder scope with a diagonal...
(Even though the one that came with it is NEW... No Trade ins.... )
.
So... I'm only using it for some reference... I don't need anything fancy... a mirror and tape would probably fix it.
.
As I was looking at the Cheap dust cover on the finder scope , I thought it looked like a cap on a water bottle.
In fact when I tried a water bottle cap... It fit , but snug ...I used an x-acto blade and cut the inside threads off.
It fits pretty good now.
.
You can see in the pictures , at first I was going to glue it with contact cement... That changed,
If I need to re polish , now it will come apart... and back together , no glues
The little "Clip" actually helps hold the angle too.
.
It has plenty of Eye Relief , I can see the cross hairs good.
I was unable to get the camera to focus on the cross hairs for a picture.
.
You decide... Worth it or waste of time.
.
Gotta Fly...
PS Now that it is done , I see i could have made it out of ONE piece of aluminum. ( Band saw work, plate with two ears that fold around )

I agree, if it works then it is good.
You may want to try to block it in so there is no stray light reflecting off of it.

I imagine you would like the store Scopestuff.com
He has many useful items with many not carried by the larger retailers.
If you want a RACI finderscope the Antares 7x50 is a excellent choice.
I have used these for years. You have the benifit of being able to use different eyepieces with it as well.
In comparison the Antares is $104 USD and the Orion RACI fixed eyepiece finder is $99 USD.

.
Right now I'm just trying to confirm and fine tune the Mounts target centering.
/
But most of the time I couldn't get into a position to look through it...

This diagonal slips on when the dust cap comes off... But comes off if needed.

I WAS going to paint everything flat black...Who knows.

If I do anything...it will be a NEW bottle cap.
.
I'll look at the link you sent...
