Florida Sky Searcher

#1

Post by FlaSky »

Newbie. Just got a Celestron Nexstar SE 6. It’s all new to me. Look g forward to learning from this forum.
Any recommendations for accessories like a Sun Filter, Moon filter etc? I notice lots of Made in China items for low prices. I’d rather spend a little more if the items are better.
Thank you.

Yes dew shield, but save some bucks. Go to the craft room and expropriate some card stock or heavy construction paper and wrap around tube, tape and presto, dew shield. I am still using one from 2010 made that way, color does not matter either, rough surface not smooth is better.

Welcome,
Steve

Hi FlaSky, welcome to TSS! Nice scope as well :D

I'd recommend some decent eyepieces to start. The stock ones are OK but some good ones will be amazing, and from there, see what you're interested in. There's a lot to look at!

All the best,
Mark

"The Hankmeister" Celestron 8SE, orange tube Vixen made C80, CG4 & AZ-EQ5 mounts.
Too much Towa glass/mirrors.

H/A - PST stage 2 mod with a Baader 90mm ERF on a Celestron XLT 102 (thanks Mike!)
Ca-K - W/O 61mm, Antares 1.6 barlow, Baader 3.8 OD and Ca-K filters with a ZWO ASI174mm.
W/L - C80-HD with Baader 5.0 & 3.8 Solar film, Solar Continuum 7.5nm and UV/IR filters with a Canon EOS 550D.

Oh yeah, and Solar Cycle 25 :D

Hi FlaSky. I also recommend a dew shield. This morning here in Rockledge, FL. the humidity was 99% and everything was wet. As to filters, you can buy a lot of them and spend much money, but these are the five that I use the most for lunar and planetary viewing to increase contrast. The variable polarizing (1-40%) filter is great on a bright moon or Jupiter and the 82A can also be used to enhance spiral arm details on some galaxies.
favorite filters2.JPG

And finally, I mention the convenience and comfort of an adjustable observing chair for those long viewing sessions. Your neck, back, and legs will thank you.

I hope this helps FlaSky and the very best of wishes for many great nights out under the sky.

Yes definitely take you recommendation on the dew shield.
I just received the Velcro rolls and will probably look into the thin bubble wrap with foil.
Are you familiar with the lens heaters?
I’m thing I’m going if I fog up I’ll need some type of heat device for moisture. I’m looking at heat strips and power supplies now. wow $$$$. Is there any alternative heater the doesn’t cost so much and does the job?

Welcome

Hmmm, Florida , Nighttime ... Mount an industrial mosquito catcher ?
.
Should be some good viewing down there...Horizon to Horizon...( Flattest State )
.
Start learning the skies.. The telescope will let you know the questions to ask.

. Some constellations will help...new ones new seasons always coming around.

You won't learn it in a day... But it will bounce around in your head , and then you're on a mission.
.
Gotta Fly...

I'm on a mission
I was up ALL night , then it dawned on me...
