I'm thinking about adventuring into astrophotography. I just want to take some pics of the Moon, Sun (with the proper filter) and planets. I'm thinking a DSLR is the way to go. Any suggestions on cameras? Or at least what I should be looking for? I'm thinking maybe $400 or less, new or used, although I'd go a bit more if the quality difference was worth it. I'm not looking to stun the world with my pictures, I just want to amuse myself and learn as I go.

I have always put forward that the Canon T3i is a good starting point for DSLR imaging. Obviously it takes great single photos with not horrible sensor noise and it does have a movie mode which allows you to take planetary videos. Now you can find them on the used Market with camera bodies less than $300. I like this camera so much I own two of them.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found one on eBay for $200 and bought it. Should be here by next weekend.

While waiting for the camera to arrive, which it did yesterday, I did a lot of reading about astrophotography. It got complicated very quickly so I narrowed it down to just using a DSLR. I played around with the camera a bit to get used to it's features, no night shots yet. If the skies allow, I'm going to try taking a few night sky pics to get started this weekend. I know I can tie the camera into my Az/Gte mount and it will take continuous 60 second exposures. Honestly, I don't know if I can change that because I haven't played around with it yet. That I can figure out on my own. I downloaded PIPP and Autostakkert on my main PC because I've seen them mentioned several times for image processing...I do have a question...I don't have a laptop yet but would a newbie like me benefit from something like NINA? And if so, would a laptop like this be good enough?

I've been playing around with astrophotography for a bit now.

First question I ask since I don't see the answer, what are you going to use as a "lens"? Telescope or actual camera lens?

I still just use my camera and pull the SD card and process images since I use Macbooks.

Here is my rig.
