Am I A Sucker?

Post by JayTee »

I just stumbled across this ad looking for information about where the index mark on a Celestron goto SLT mount is located. I saw this, read the description, researched the company, and then bought one at the price listed. It seems too good to be true, but I guess I'll find out the hard way.

If it's real, that's a hell of a deal.

I do not think you are a sucker. This looks promising. I would appreciate knowing how this plays out. I would buy one as well.

It could be a early Version 4 unit, still good though, just do not try updating it with cfm files :)

As far as I know the index is set when you apply power to the SLT mount.
You can spin the axis to any point, disconnect power, apply power and it will build a map from that location.
I that makes sense.

Nope. Nothing more than the ad description and a double confirmation of the sale in my email. One from a garden supply company and the other from a home theater company. Because of this I'm checking daily for a double charge to the credit card I used.

This whole thing seems odd, but I'll ride it out until I see the conclusion.

It's not looking good for the home team.

I got an initial email confirming the sale on Sep 16, but as of now no notification for the shipping. I called to find out when it would be shipped and I got sent immediately to voice mail and then further notification that the "mailbox is full" message. I sent an email to the confirmation email address and asked for a shipping update and also stated that if I haven't heard back from them by next Wednesday, I would contact my credit card company and reverse the charge.

I'll let you know what happens.

I hate to say it, but to me it looks like a pop-up scam site, here today, gone tomorrow. My wife got scammed by a couple of those buying Christmas gifts and pet stuff. If you receive anything, it'll likely be nothing like what you thought you were getting. A quick search for "warmshoppings" will give you enough to worry about. If it's a company that you've never heard of, selling stuff for incredible prices, sounding too good to be true, it probably is.

I hope you prove me wrong.

Sorry JT I miss replied there, all Celestron SE and SLT mounts do not have a starting point no matter the version.
The starting point is where ever you power the mount on.

I ordered a power tool from a company at a very good price. While I was there I also saw a workshop storage unit at a similarly attractive price which I also ordered. 2 months later a 50c pair of sunglasses arrived corresponding to the power tool tracking number. A few days later, another pair of 50c plastic sunglasses arrived corresponding to the storage unit number. When I asked for a return/refund, they first told me that I probably ordered the sunglasses. I told them that I use prescription sunglasses and I would never order straight sunglasses.

Then they "apologised" for the error but would only offer me a 25% discount to keep the glasses meaning I would pay around USD50 for each pair of 50c glasses. I told them I would launch a dispute with Paypal. They assurred me I would never get my money back if I did that, PayPal would take many months and nothing would come of it and they would withdraw their discount.

I took it to PayPal, they were interested in the scam, asked me to lodge a police report and refunded all my money for both items within a few days of receiving the police reports.

I hope this is not your situation and you can reverse the charge. PayPal is a bit better that way. I almost never buy anything directly with a credit card online unless it's a ticket for a major airline, major car rental company etc where there is no other way.

Well, as it turns out I am a sucker. This company has no intention of sending the product out to me and they will not provide a refund and their correspondence keeps saying they have no record of the transaction (even though they took my money.) So as of today, I have filed a dispute with my credit card company and we'll see where it goes from here. They tell me I have a pretty good chance of getting my money back, so that would be nice.

Once again this episode proves the old axiom, "if it's too good to be true, it probably is."

Sorry to hear that. I hope you get your refund. I pursued mine because among other things, I wanted to shut them down. I wrote to PayPal, thanksed them for the refund and said that I thought they should not provide financial services to these scammers. Also reported them to Facebook as a scam. After that, I didn't see any more adds from that company although it's pretty easy for them to set up under a new name.

Keep checking your credit card daily for false charges, there is a possibility they could sell your card info to more scammers.

My CC was compromised yesterday, 3 Skype calls were charged to my card. Turns out a gas station on the interstate in MD sold my card info.
