StarTravel 102 AZ3

#1

Post by littleboss »

we have a Startravel 102 and so far have mainly used it for looking at wildlife. It comes with 10mm and 25mm Super eyepieces. We need a lens with more magnification power. We live four or five miles from the mountains and would like a better view of objects on the mountains.
What do you suggest?
Second we saw our first bear and would have liked a way to have taken a photo of it with a smart phone. What kind of accessory can we add to do that?
Thanks

There are accessories like this for attaching a smartphone to the telescope:

I'm sure others who have actually done a bit more phone photography may be able to help a bit more...

Regarding the eyepiece...

Others may well chime in with recommendations as well but I'd recommend getting this (or something like it)

https://www.firstlightoptics.com/bst-st ... piece.html

together with this:

https://www.firstlightoptics.com/bst-st ... -lens.html

(Sorry, I don't know stores in the US... for sure these or a variant sold as a different name is available there...)

This with your 25mm eyepiece would give you possibilities of:
25mm = 20x
12.5mm (25mm with the 2x barlow) = 40x
8mm = 64x
4mm (8mm with the 2x barlow) = 128x

I'd forget about the 10mm that Skywatcher supply with the scope as it's really not very good... the 25mm on the hand is actually really quite good!

Hope that helps!
SW Flextube 12" Dobsonian.

Eyepieces: TV Delos 17.3 & 10; Pentax XW 7 & 5; BCO 32,18,10; Fuyiyama Ortho 12.5; Vixen SLV 25.
