Is this barlow any good?

#1

Post by Thefatkitty »

Hey all, I'm hoping you knowledgeable folk can help me out a bit here :D

I recently noticed an ad on Kijiji, a Canadian online buy & sell.

It's for a Meade barlow, model 140. The seller wants $90CDN for it ($70USD), says it's in perfect condition, and I'm wondering if it's worth it. It comes with the dust caps and box, and the seller is not far from me.
I'm mainly looking for a barlow for my 61mm WO Zenithstar. The scope is advertised as an APO, but it's got only two objective lenses, one being FPL-53, so to me it's an ED doublet. Don't know if that matters with this barlow.

The sellers shots:

It would also be used for viewing with the 61mm scope and my f/11+ achro's, but primarily for imaging the Sun in white light and maybe Calcium-K later on with the 61mm.

Does anyone know about these; are they any good, years made, anything at all.... Or should I just save for a 1.25" 2.5X Powermate?

Thanks in advance for the help! :D

Is the clear aperture mentioned? I cannot remember at the moment but I think it is about 18mm.
Other than that it is a good visual barlow but I have no idea how well it works for imaging.

While looking for the actual figure I stumbled upon this: https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/7381 ... -surprise/

What Gabby says. :) For visual it should perform nicely, better than your typical shorty. I believe tis model was made in Japan in early 2000s.

I can't comment on imaging performance.

The price seems a bit high. At least for US used market, where I would expect it to sell for ~$50.

Thanks Gabrielle, that post on CN was an interesting read for sure. I might give it a try; maybe I can get him to drop the price...

Thank you as well Andrey, visual is still something I do, weather permitting (and it hasn't permitted as of late!).

Yeah, scope stuff is pricey here, even in the used market. Some things I can't get here either such as my KK Ortho's. Agena Astro was my only choice for those.

Hmmmm; to buy or not to buy...??

From my perspective, if you are questioning yourself just save some more and get exactly what you want.

If you are just looking for a good price on a 2x barlow, AD# 63723 has a 1.25" 2x for $40CND and it is in Toronto area.
