Lense adventures / Where's my Barlow ?

#1

Post by planecrazzzy »

.
Lemme Splain,
I have an Orion 10" DOB , SkyQuest XT10 intelliscope
I have been using 1.25 lenses ( 32mm,25mm,12.5mm and a 10mm and a Shorty's Barlow )
.
I have moved from a complete idiot , to just an idiot... Dare I throw money at this...
I pull the trigger.... $58 bucks for a SvONY -2" 26mm FOV 70
Oooo , Stepping up to two inch...$$$
I need a Barlow in two inch now.... Ok, $85 bucks....
Hmmm, I tried it out.....Not Chrisp ?...Hmmm , Sent the Barlow back.
OK, I'm going to make an investment , If I have a GOOD Lense behind a cheap barlow , that downgrades it.
So... Telvue 2X 2" Powermate $343.... Wow , spendy.... I bought it after the refund "cleared" from the first barlow.
About a week later , I'm over the cost , can't wait to get my Powermate ( Not barlow ? )
Yea...I get it... I open it up to find THE WRONG ONE...
They sent the cheaper 1.25" powermate....WTF
They won't exchange it , I have to return it...then order it AGAIN....
I told them I won't be buying it from THEM.
Meanwhile , I found an Orion 4 element 2X 2" Barlow for $219.
My barlow journey only took over 3 weeks
.
So.... Back to the part about me being an Idiot....
I learned a little about focal length...
The FIRST BARLOW WAS FINE.... The Lense I bought from SvONY needs to be LIFTED in order to get focus.
(I have some of those focal rings in the "cart" at Amazon.)
.
I think later I'll buy the 3 pak from Orion 2' Wide field of View around $260
.
Anybody got any thoughts about SvONY products...?
.
Gotta Fly...
JAM
.
I was up ALL night , then it dawned on me...

You already have a 12.5mm so barlowing a 26mm creates a bit of redundancy unless there is a large difference in AFOV.

My thoughts on SVBony are stated in this thread: viewtopic.php?t=13757

Mike, what ever you do, PLEASE, don't buy EPs in packs! :) You have a nice and very capable scope. To get the most from it invest in 3-4 GOOD quality EPs.

I would suggest Explore Scientific 82 deg and 68 deg series. They are well corrected for the fast DOBs like yours and offer a good balance of quality, performance and price. Meade UWA 5000 82 deg series is another good option, but they are out of production and only can be find used.

For your scope I would aim for ~5mm, ~7mm, ~10mm and 20-30mm
Scopes: Stellarvue: SV102ED; Celestron: 9.25" EdgeHD, 8" SCT, 150ST, Onyx 80ED; iOptron: Hankmeister 6" Mak; SW: 7" Mak; Meade: 80ST.
Mounts: SW: SkyTee2, AzGTi; iOptron: AZMP; ES: Twilight I; Bresser: EXOS2; UA: MicroStar.
Binos: APM: 100-90 APO; Canon: IS 15x50; Orion: Binoviewer, LG II 15x70, WV 10x50, Nikon: AE 16x50, 10x50, 8x40.
EPs: Pentax: XWs & XFs; TeleVue: Delites, Panoptic & Plossls; ES: 68, 62; Vixen: SLVs; Baader: BCOs, Aspherics, Mark IV.
Diagonals: Baader: BBHS mirror, Zeiss Spec T2 prism, Clicklock dielectric; TeleVue: Evebrite dielectric; AltairAstro: 2" prism.
Filters: Lumicon: DeepSky, UHC, OIII, H-beta; Baader: Moon & SkyGlow, Contrast Booster, UHC-S, 6-color set; Astronomik: UHC.
Solar: HA: Lunt 50mm single stack, W/L: Meade Herschel wedge.

Observing: DSOs: 3106 (Completed: Messier, Herschel 1, 2, 3. In progress: H2,500: 2180, S110: 77). Doubles: 2437, Comets: 34, Asteroids: 257

My first two telescopes came with 1.25 lenses... The 2" 26mm FOV 70, is the only separate one I bought so far. Even thou it was a cheap one , it introduces me to two inch... and wider field of view.
.
I'll be reviewing future ones here.
I stayed away from forums at the beginning.
It was like I didn't even know the questions to ask.
Or understand an answer...
( well, I still might have trouble with THAT one )

Oh , I'll be back picking the brains here when it comes time to buy another lense.
.
Just got my New Orion 6" Astrograph telescope today...
So I'll be exploring even more new territory .
Hopefully it will be my new "Go to" scope.
Quite a step up from my Celestron 90mm spotting scope.
But lighter than the 10" DOB

Take care in selecting eyepieces. Getting them one at a time is a good idea as Bigzmey suggests. Oldies also can be goodies. My vintage 1979 Edmund RKE still gets some play in my 6" refractor.
