New Moon + 3 days with "Earth Shine"

#1

Post by gcisko »

Here is another attempt to get an image of the moon showing the "earth shine" on the shadowed side of the moon. I combined 2 exposures in PhotoShop.

NOTE: Clicking on the image and/or going to flickr.com will show much more detail in the full resolution image than the thumbnail in this post.

Camera: Sony A7 with Sigma 600mm telephoto lens
Settings: F/8.3, ISO 100, 1/125 Sec exposure
Processing: Sequator, Photoshop
Date:7/02/2022

Well done! Folk might think it is the easiest thing to take a picture of the crescent moon, looking just like it does with the eye, but it is far from easy. I'm very impressed! 8-)

It is a little tricky. My experience in solar imaging helped. In solar imaging you take an exposure of the solar surface at one exposure and another (second) picture of the filaments/proms at a more sensitive exposure - which is the equivalent to deep sky imaging. Then you combine these 2 images to get the great images you see at times on the solar imaging forum.

In the case of the moon earth shine image, I took one exposure of the crescent at ISO 100 with a 1/125 second exposure(6 images combined/stacked in Sequator). For the dark shadowed part it was ISO 100 at 2 seconds exposure (6 images combined/stacked in Sequator). It was then fairly straight forward to combine the 2 images to get the final result I posted.

Bottom line to remember is the image I posted was not a single image taken with my Sony A7. I also believe many images posted here have some sort of jumping through hoops like this. It is certainly true for those solar images. You can easily tell the single exposure images - at least I think I can :telescopewink:

You can do it too, if you use the same type of process I mentioned in another reply.

Nicely done; you nailed that! I like your process to get that too :D

I'll have to remember this post if I one day get an HA scope...

Thanks for the info and great final pic!

All the best,
Mark

Hi Greg. A very nice lunar image revealing the Earth shine, especially on the flickr site. Thanks for sharing the view with us on here Greg and keep up the great work.
