The Astro Imaging Channel had a nice walk thru of the Generalized Hyperbolic Stretch by its authors, Mike Crane and David Payne. Whether you plan to use GHS our not, I found the upfront discussion of stretching and the process of interpreting your image's histogram to be really helpful in terms of how to approach your general stretching strategy.

Hope you find in helpful.
