Observing List generator

#1

Post by Star Dad »

Hi Everyone -
I do a lot of outreach and generating an observation list is really time consuming. I've written a small program in C that takes a file (you have to get it separately from NASA) of M/NGC/IC objects and given your position/time/ and a minimum altitude angle and a list of potential objects will generate an HTML file of objects that are observable and/or for AP. I am NOT an experienced user of github...(This is my first project on github). So I don't know if the files are really available for download or not. It was an hour's struggle just to get the files uploaded - I had to allow some java scripts on github to run (it wasn't very obvious). Anyway - here's the link (I think) to the code and file. Source code included. It is currently made for Linux - although it's just simple C and should compile using any compiler/OS.
Please let me know if you were able to find it/download it and or any problems. Definitely read the READ_ME file.

Thanks

Just as an FYI, Ivo with APT has told me that list generation will be in one of the next two beta sessions for APT. You'll be able to look out into the future. 4.0 just came out of beta a couple of weeks back.

I'm a programmer as well and am looking for something you just did; I didn't get Trig or Calculus in school, so the math is elusive to me at this point, a working solution will be an awesome speed up for me, thanks for making it available. Looking at your formulas, it looks like my problem was getting the parenthesis correct

OMG, an Amiga! I haven't thought about that platform since the 80s!

Chris

Also, I don't mean to rain on your efforts but there is a great website called telescopius whose only job is to generate observing list.

Yes, I am aware of Telescopius - and use it fairly regularly. What I want though is the ability to instantly create a printout of any observable objects given the above mentioned parameters. It's just too time consuming to have to go through a list of objects one at a time... plus Telescopius (AFIAK) doesn't give azimuth data - just altitude. Correct me if I'm wrong on that - I haven't explored the Telescopius list creation.

AFA the Amiga - yeah, I was an original software developer for it way back in 1980s. My company (I was the grand poo-bah) released a game called "Age Of Sail" but unfortunately for the company I got married and my time dwindled dramatically to work on the code. I asked my board of directors for help but no one stepped up, so we folded. I still have 2 Amigas - a 3000 and a 1000. I run the Amiga OS using Amigaforever on windows. Boy is it fast on today's hardware... and astonishingly small executables compared with today's bloatware. I plan on releasing the software for the Amiga (I made an orrery for the Amiga).
