Processing Challenge 31 - Orion SHO

#1

Post by Jockinireland »

Apologies for this being late - I've been a bit busy with other stuff.

The Great Orion Nebula is one of the most imaged DSO's But usually it is done as a broadband target. This time abound we have a chance to see how we can make this look in narrowband as @BABOafrica has kindly given us his SHO data for this.

See here for the Babo's original post and capture details viewtopic.php?f=66&t=23213&p=190513&hil ... 42#p190513

Data can be downloaded as 32b fit or 16b tiff from here https://1drv.ms/u/s!Alj6NhuYfZtW8nZXaRD ... b?e=WHWc6k

Post your images and workflow to this thread.

Take care

David

I coudn't really document the process , it was alot of tweaking, had to recurve the histogram before lrgb combining along with many background extractions

I uploaded the files I used myself. They were TIF files. Perhaps they seem to be stretched, but I don't think do.

In any case, I can re-do the stacking if you want and save the result as FIT files. I still have all the original data.

BABO

PS Thanks for one beautiful result already posted... As I told David, the data is not the best ever captured...

Thanks Babo, it might be good if you could restack as 32b fit. Your Ha file is showing pretty much the whole nebula with the core pretty bright. That seems unusual for 30 secs with a Ha filter and is why I thought they were stretched.

With my gear - my 2600mc and my SW 80 ED (similar f ratio to your WO I think) at 180s with the L-enhance - so less restrictive than your 7nm NB I get this as the unstretched Ha channel
m42180s_ns.JPG
With a quick STF stretch it becomes this
m42180s_STF.JPG
This is your 30s, unstretched in PI
M42BA_ns.JPG
So it just seems strange that your unstretched 20 & 30S show so much more than my stretched 180s.

But of course I may be completely missing something.

thanks again,

David.

Here's a very quick and simple processing of the posted data. I'll work with anything since I haven't had a clear night since last November (well, two partially clear nights with a full moon in the sky ... Rrrr).

In Photoshop:
- Tone Mapping the three images
- Combined the images using the Hubble Palette
- Cut down and reduced the image size
- Offset Option to fix "eggy" stars
- Brought into MaxIm DL to "Flatten Background" and "Remove Gradient."
- Back in Photoshop to adjust background brightness using Levels
- Finished

Hi @BABOafrica

I am out right now but I managed to take a look at the new Ha file and it looks as I'd expect an unstretched file to look. So thanks for doing that.

I'll put the new files in the folder when I get home.

Thanks again

David.

To produce the new Ha channel, all I did was chose a random 12 subs from the previous stacking and it seemed to improve.

If I stacked 50 subs , or even just 30 subs, the result was that same as before when I stacked all the good images I had for Ha (72).

I thought stacking more files was supposed to be better.... Not sure what's happening there.

In any case, I also did a re-pro using my new set (the set I just posted today). This is what I got:

M42 nb H-12x60s O-56x60s S-22x60s Q208-83-0 WO66-E sec.jpg

In Photoshop:
- Tone Mapping the three images
- Noise Reduction using NIK tools
- Combined the images using the Hubble Palette
- Used the Ha data for a luminance channel
- Cut down, reduced the image size and rotated
- Set the background to 25 using Levels

The end result isn't that much different from my previous post.

Thanks Babo for sharing your data ...

Here is a version done with PixInsight.

PROCESSING STEPS:
Crop S, H and O images
Remove background gradients on all three images using DynamicBackgroundExtraction
Noise reduction with TGVDenoise on all three images
Stretch all three images to nonlinear with HistogramTransformation
Combine into SHO image
  • Increase color saturation with CurvesTransformation
  • Adjust black points to achieve a gray background
  • Remove Magenta
  • Run SCNR to remove Green
Extract Luminance image from SHO image
  • Sharpen using MultiscaleLinearTransform
  • Enhance contrast using LocalHistogramEqualization
Apply LRGBCombination to SHO image with sharpened Luminance used as L
Reduce star sizes using EZ Star Reduction

Thanks to Joe for sharing his data.

I was eager to share the data mainly because I wanted to see how much better others do their processing.

Amazing to see how you can take the data and make the image look really nice.

Thanks Joe. I've been concentrating on NB imaging for about a year now and just learned a new "secret" about removing gradients from the background. Your data was a perfect fit for what I've just learned and for all my practice on other NB data. Thanks again for sharing.

I am purely an OSC imager so this NB data is way out of my comfort zone but I gave it my best shot.

Processing was;
Crop and DBE on all H, S & O
Deconvolution on Ha - I could not get decent result for O & S
EZ denoise on all three
Stretch all 3 with HT - not full stretch
Removed the stars in all three with starrnet 2
TGV denoise, LHE on each. I also did some unsharp mask on the S & O to compensate for the failed decon.
Combined using SHO-AIP scrpt which allows for different blendings
Adding back the stars - I combined the three sets of stars but felt they were not great so I then also did a recombine using only the Ha stars.
Rotated the image to my preferred orientation

I ended up with 4 versions
First a standard SHO in which I have left the green prominent - Hubble SHO is always quite green so its good enough for me.
This with all three channel stars
SHORecomb_smalNBstars.jpg
Then with only Ha stars
recomb3_RGBstars.jpg
But for me a green M42 is just too weird so I did a blend which is closer to the HOO that I'm used to but with the S blended in to G also
Again first with the full NB stars
Recomb_smalNBstars.jpg
Then with only Ha stars
HOORecomb_RGBstrs.jpg
I tend to prefer the smaller cleaner Ha only stars but that has lost a few important stars. I've also blown out the core a bit.
But overall I like the effect on the main gas clouds and also the fact that some of the background dust is showing up.

I could probably learn to like a green M42 but it will take some time

Thanks for sharing the data @BABOafrica

Beautiful job David. Looks like you won't have any processing problems switching to NB if you ever choose to do so.

Thanks Steve! You know the 2600mm keeps singing it's siren song. But with filter wheel and decent filters it's a sizeable chunk of cash. And I've only had the 2600mc for a year. Then I tell myself I could also use the 2600mm for lum on top of the rgb from the 2600mc. That would work!

But then I remind myself that I got about 4 nights clear this winter so it's hard to justify.

But watch this space :D

Take care.

I hear you David, the cash outlays come fast and furious when making a change to NB.
Only 4 nights through the winter, OUCH!! With that few nights OSC certainly has it's advantages.

Good luck whichever way you go.

I re-processed the data and toned done the tone mapping for a more natural look using the Hubble palette. Again, not a whole lot different. However, I do enjoy the posts that use Pixinsight as the main image processing software. As I use Photoshop for just about all my image processing, it's good see that this "old" software can still remain relevant against software, designed from the "get go," for astro image processing. Keep 'em coming ....
