A grab 'n go telescope

#1

Post by turboscrew »

I ordered Omegon AC 102/660 on AZ-3 to be used as a grab 'n go scope. I hope I didn't make a big mistake.
It was on sale in a Finnish shop: 282.75 € (~US $307.50) including delivery.
I'm aware that the mount is not good, but...

IMO, you certainly did not make a big mistake. I understand from your posts that you do not suffer from back trouble the way I do, so yes, it would be grab-and-go for you. The only reservation I have about the concept of these types of 'scope is that I also have a pair of 15x70 binoculars, which get far more use than my Skywatcher ST80. My ST80 has the advantage that it can support higher magnification and I used it a lot before I bought a DSLR for astrophotography with a zoom lens. I also used it a lot for afocal photography with a compact digital camera before I went down the DSLR route.

I would say that I got my money's worth but it gets little use now. For deep sky browsing I use my binoculars and for planetary I use a 127mm Mak, which is heavy, but useable for me, but others would consider it as a grab-and-go' scope.

I don't think you'll find it to be a mistake. I love my cheap 80/400 for GnG. I'm finding my f7 102ED to be on the heavy side for GnG. Great optics, but not sure it was a good choice. SkyWatcher AZ5s aren't very expensive if you decide to upgrade.

I found my 10 x 50 binoculars a bit too small. And the total weight should be about 10 kg (22 lb).
My CEM120 alone weights 27 kg (59 lb).

Sounds like a good pick-up Juha. Hopefully you'll get it soon if the item was in stock. Supply chain issues from Asia have been a bit of a problem for telescope gear here recently.

That's why the hasty trigger pulling. There are not many left around Europe, and then the sale.
And if I think what COVID did, I don't think the war actually helps things. So many flight routes over Russia are no-go area today.

At least I didn't find anything very nasty about those scopes, and I recall @Lady Fraktor mentioning, that if I wanted to touch a Celestron AstroMaster, I should make sure, that the stick is at least 2 meters long.

Wear gloves as well.

Most of the Omegon achromat refractors are rebranded Skywatcher so the optics should be good
Somewhere in this mess I still have a Celestron branded 102mm f/6.5

If this is the same it will usually have a 100mm long dovetail screwed to the tube which is limiting if you wish to put it on other mounts or balance with heavy eyepieces.
I would suggest in the future a upgrade to rings and a proper vixen style dovetail.

This is a good choice.

I have used the same AZ3 mount for a year first with 90mm F7.3 and then with 120ST. The mount is a bit shaky but usable. I even managed some tight double splits at 375x power.

As Gabby commented the scope is likely made by Synta and sold also under SW and Celestron brands.
Scopes: Stellarvue: SV102ED; Celestron: 9.25" EdgeHD, 8" SCT, 150ST, Onyx 80ED; iOptron: Hankmeister 6" Mak; SW: 7" Mak; Meade: 80ST.
Mounts: SW: SkyTee2, AzGTi; iOptron: AZMP; ES: Twilight I; Bresser: EXOS2; UA: MicroStar.
Binos: APM: 100-90 APO; Canon: IS 15x50; Orion: Binoviewer, LG II 15x70, WV 10x50, Nikon: AE 16x50, 10x50, 8x40.
EPs: Pentax: XWs & XFs; TeleVue: Delites, Panoptic & Plossls; ES: 68, 62; Vixen: SLVs; Baader: BCOs, Aspherics, Mark IV.
Diagonals: Baader: BBHS mirror, Zeiss Spec T2 prism, Clicklock dielectric; TeleVue: Evebrite dielectric; AltairAstro: 2" prism.
Filters: Lumicon: DeepSky, UHC, OIII, H-beta; Baader: Moon & SkyGlow, Contrast Booster, UHC-S, 6-color set; Astronomik: UHC.

Observing: DSOs: 3106 (Completed: Messier, Herschel 1, 2, 3. In progress: H2,500: 2180, S110: 77). Doubles: 2382, Comets: 34, Asteroids: 255

Hi Juha, I sure it will be a good scope. AZ3 is an ok mount, the shaky aluminium legs not so much. These can be easily replaced with diy wooden legs though.

Some time ago I was deciding between Skywatcher 102/500 and Bresser AR102/600 and went for the Bresser mainly due to a vastly better focuser. It is still one of my favourite refractors however I do not consider it to be a grab and go. Too heavy for that purpose.
For grab and go I much prefer a pair of binoculars. I have an old Carl Zeiss Jena 8x30. Quite small but does the job. When I feel a need for more aperture I use ST80 on a photographic tripod with a ball head and panoramic platform.

I'm thinking that could be the sweet spot for me. A little more aperture than the 80, but not much difference in weight or size.
