I hear you Bill. :) My first option is always to see nebulae in their "natural" environment. If that fails I push for it with filters. I would rather see the nebula with filters than go home empty.

But what about good quality color filters for planets? At first I was also turned off by "unnatural" colors, but after realizing that I can resolve low contrast details on Moon, Mars and Saturn better with filters, I use them during all dedicated planetary/lunar sessions. Except Jupiter, for Jupiter nothing beats Baader Sky and Moon Glow + Contrast Booster filter combo.
