Orion 6x30 RACI replacement stalk?

#1

Post by pakarinen »

I have an Orion 6x30 that's a nice little finder - inexpensive and surprisingly sharp optics. But the stalk is about 6 inches long so it sticks way out from the OTA. It looks like some weird antenna or something and I worry about snagging it.

Thought I'd ask for suggestions for modifying or replacing the stalk before I pull out my hacksaw and duck tape. Thanks!

Celestron makes or used to make 6x30 straightthrough finders which have low base. If you mage to find one I bet you can swap the bases between that and your Orion.

Also these base is not as tall as yours

I had the same issue and finding no commercial option, I made my own. Used the top of a 6x30 stalk and the bottom of a spare 8x50 stalk.
Once cut down, the 6x30 stalk nestled into the bottom of the 8x50 stalk. after a little filling and tapping and threading a couple of screws all went together well and works great.
