Soul Nebula in HOO

The Soul Nebula (also designated as Sharpless 2-199 and LBN 667) is thought to be an active star forming region located in the constellation Cassiopeia. It contains several small star clusters. It is located 7,500 LY away. The long dimension appears about 5x the diameter of the moon and the width appears about 2.5x the diameter of the moon. North is down.

This modified HOO image is a combination on recently acquired Oiii data along with Ha and Oiii data from last year. The Surface Blur Noise Reduction technique was used to help reduce background noise. The image has been slightly cropped. Original image size = 4656x3520 pixels. Cropped image size = 3475x3314 pixels.

IMAGE DETAILS:
Equipment:
W.O. Star71 telescope, 3 nm Chroma S/H/O/ filters, ASI1600MM camera (-15C, Gain=140), CEM40 mount, Orion MMAG autoguider, StarLite stepper motor (focusing)

[Mount/ASI1600MM camera/Filter wheel/MMAG autoguider/Focusing stepper motor all controlled remotely using APT. APT is on a laptop in the house which is connected by a WEme 4-port USB 2.0 extender system with 40 ft ethernet cable connecting the equipment outside to the laptop inside the house.]

Images:
29x600 sec Ha (4 hr 50 min), 55x600 sec O3 (9 hr 10 min, Total Exposure 14 hr), 24 Darks, 30 Flats, 30 Flat Darks

Software:
Captured with APT, Guided with PHD2, Processed with PixInsight. The new APT Autofocus routine was used for all focusing.

Weather and my body permitting, I hope to be able to capture some Sii data for a SHO version. My first look at the Sii signal shows it to be even weaker than the Oiii signal which is already fairly week. Should be interesting.

Congrats on the well-deserved TSS APOD.

Good luck on capturing the S2 data.

The image, though, is already excellent.

Absolutely stunning, Steve. So much detail and contrast between the colours. The difference between this image with your equipment and what I can get with my DSLR is absolutely incredible. Amazing stuff and congrats on your TSS APOD. You should enter it in for the NASA APOD.
