Quanta: An Ultra-Precise Clock Shows How to Link the Quantum World With Gravity

No, it doesn't. The title is way overblown hype. There is nothing here at the Planck scale.

This is just a small scale measurement of gravitational redshift.

Now where this technology is heading is another matter:
Take the case where a massive object is put into a superposition of two possible locations at the same time. General relativity says that any object with mass should bend the fabric of space-time. But what if that object is in a superposition? Is the geometry of space-time also in a superposition?
Now that WOULD be something worthy of the hype in the title and the article.
If Ye’s team improves their clock’s sensitivity by about another factor of 10 — a few years from now, at the current rate of improvement — they can start searching for gravitational effects in the behavior of their atoms. The first signatures of this would appear in a process called decoherence.
So we're a few years premature.....

So, the bus stop is in-between, but the direction is right?

Yes. In fact the route selected has many intermediate stops. But it is almost the only route that avoids the enormous economic and technological burden of directly probing at Planck scales. The other possible path is timing gamma ray bursts. If spacetime has a granular structure extremely high energy gamma rays would be retarded with respect to lower energy rays from the same event.
