Its extremely effective when applied to the inner surface of eyepiece 1.25" barrel part (the part where you would thread a filter onto)
Even for the 1.25" barrel of my diagonal. it makes such a big difference! instant dramatic improvement. Now at a distance from the eyepiece everything outside the exit pupil is almost perfectly pitch black like a void! even when pointing the scope against the bright daytime sky! No more shinyness or reflections! at night its a big boost in contrast too. definitely noticable. really helps in dark adaptation too I think!

Just make sure you don't do it to anything flammable. check a small area first. make sure its metal and not plastic.
and never ever touch the inner parts with your fingers (You may have to reapply if you attach filters regularly. due to the coating getting scraped off)
if there was a way to seal the coating on permanently without affecting its appearance it'd be EPIC for flocking small parts!

I used a long/extension bbq type lighter.

make sure to of course unthread the barrel from the eyepiece/diagonal/thing its attached to. detach it. (I'm sure it could work for 2" or so too) and dont touch it with your bare fingers cause it will get super hot. place it on a heat resistance surface and use oven mitts or heat resistant gloves while handling.
and wait for it to cool down before putting it back on.

Yes. Soot is very matt black, but be careful. Some soot can easily detach and land on your lenses.

Yeah tap it a few times at different angles. maybe use a rocket blower. to blow out any loose particles. before re-attaching. should of mentioned that.
but otherwise it works pretty fantastic.
The contrast is noticably boosted at night. Can see m32 andromedas satellite galaxy in averted vision in only a few minutes of observing!
And the outer area of the exit pupil is very very very black. absolutely void-black. super pitch black. no hint of glare or flares anymore.
The focuser baffling is also positioned better in the focuser now also. after fine-tuning it so its just right

I wonder how much a small bottle of VantaBlack goes for?...

you can get a lighter for like a dollar or less from pretty much anywhere. though a bbq lighter with the extended bit is easier to use.
And a paint like vantablack probably would clog the threads for putting a filter on. preventing it from threading on entirely. or making it difficult.
the thin layer of carbon from the lighter doesnt seem to impact threading a filter on at all.

A can of Krylon Ultra black would be cheaper.

But not as black. Most black paints only absorb 84-86% of light but VantaBlack absorbs over 98%.
Stuff painted with VantaBlack don't even look real. It's like looking into a Black Hole.

Yes but a bit overkill for a eyepiece barrel.

Maybe for an eyepiece but I've often wondered if using a paint like VantaBlack on the inside of a scope tube would help with contrast.
