Sharpcap 3.0 vs 4.0

The main difference between the old SC 3.0 and the newest SC - 4.0 is the GAMMA control. For solar I have always used the gamma along with exposure and gain. You can see the results during the capture.

BUT if you can't download 3.0 all is not lost. I had to download 4.0 to try my new Player 1 Neptune-M camera (I can't recommend it for solar).

after my imaging session today with my ASI174 and SC 3.0 I opened 4.0 and ran a few shots of the prom I was imaging and also of the surface. I haven't done the surface yet.

Here are the proms, which is 3.0 and which is 4.0 ( I know and will tell in a bit)

It's hard to tell which is which, but they are both fantastic!

Indeed it's tough. They are both very fine. But the bit about gamma control leads me to think that B is 4.0 based on slightly better internal contrast detail in the proms. That is unless gamma was cranked in the other direction!

Curtain please

the first picture "A" is the SC 4.0 B is SC 3.0

I always use 3.0 and two two separate exposures, the surface I set gamma to 1 and then for the proms I set gamma all the way to the right and then usually do 3 exposures at 100, 95 and 90 and then process and see which shows them the best.

I found that 3.0 and 4.0 for the chromosphere is virtually the same, you have to do a little more work in 4.0 in Photoshop to bring it up like 3.0 but the proms in 3.0 the gamma gives you more control

at least these are my findings

Nice comparison Jeff.

I'll stick with my 3.0 for as long as possible. Being able to apply Gamma is critical in my opinion.

Clear Skies

I agree with you 100%, only did the test because I had to download 4.0 to get the Player One Neptune-M to be recognized so decided to try it out for solar, I prefer 3.0 for solar 4.0 for DSO and Lunar
