it is, you just got to look in the right place. Maybe we should get a new advertising agency.

JayTee wrote: Sun May 12, 2019 10:46 pm To help with locating your first objects, I would recommend you download a free planetarium program called Stellarium. If you prefer getting your information online, I use a site called CalSky (calsky.com).
Good advice all the way around, JayTee. It might help to recast this after some kind of round robin among the stalwarts here.

I recommend that because I took Stellarium off my computer. It is too complicated for my needs.

I use the Sky & Telescope "Sky Tonight" maps here:
https://skyandtelescope.org/interactive-sky-chart/
It is easy to use. It is little under-powered. For example, the planet Uranus never appears here and right now, it is a good target. But, again, I got tired of hassling with Stellarium just to know what's up tonight. And I started with Stellarium ten years ago for a project for a graduate class in physics. It was OK then for what we needed, but I just don't need all of that right now.

Still, and all, your advice was generally pretty good. I trust that other moderators could enhance this. It's hard to say everything all at once at the very top in big type. You mentioned your advertising agency. It was a quip, but not far off the mark. I work as a technical writer, but I bow to the User Experience designers.

Best Regards,
Mike M.

Yeah, periodic updates on these types of articles are probably a good thing. The original title of this article was All New Christmas Telescope Owners, Please READ! Then I broadened the approach and that is what you see here. The original Christmas version was published over on the now defunct AF.net.

Cheers,

Great write up the only thing I can add , people get a solar filter to look at the Sun , and if the telescope has a magnified finder dont use it , put the cap on , even a finder can do damage and may destroy the cross hairs , I once was watching a partial solar eclipse and forgot to put the cap on the finder , it was gone melted away

I need some advice on how to acquire enough wealth and how to persuade my wife to let me spend some of it on kit.

Excellent advice,I have been doing just what you said in the article .
The more you get familiar with the scope and all the knobs and settings and doing it during the day it makes it way easier at night !
Thanks for the article it was awesome!
