for travel use .
I want to know if.
I thought of buying myself a televue 85 for my trips.
I have read several reviews, they all say it is a wonderful telescope.
but these reviews have been around for a little while now.
so the question is.
is this still a good buy to make?
thank you for your input.

For $2600+ (CDN) I personally would look at something more modern.
Take a look at the Teleskop-Service offerings, even with exchange and shipping, refractors in the 80mm-90mm range would be less than the TV-85

That being said, however....I do tend to agree with Gabby and nFA, in that you can probably find a top quality refractor in this
Celestron CPC1100 SCT....Celestron Evolution 8 SCT...TeleVue-85 apo...SkyWatcher ST150 achro..ST102 achro..ST80 achro.
Celestron AVX...Orion Atlas EQ-G...SkyTee-2...Twilight-1.

EPs: TeleVue oldie (NJ) & modern Plossls, Widefields, and Naglers + 3-6 zoom & Brandons 6-32.

they have a huge choice.
I don't really know this company just by name and reputation.
do you have a suggestion for me?

thank you for this input, I really appreciate it.SpyderwerX wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 4:33 pm The TV-85 is a wonderful refractor that just oozes quality in its build and performance. You won't be at all disappointed. The later models have been fitted with the dual speed focuser which is butter smooth. I purchased mine simply because the prime opportunity presented itself, and for somewhat of a "nostalgic" reasoning simply based on the TeleVue reputation. Plus, I like TeleVue products. If you can find one on the pre-owned market I would definitely consider it.
That being said, however....I do tend to agree with Gabby and nFA, in that you can probably find a top quality refractor in this aperture range with equal or greater performance for a lesser hit on the piggy bank.

Re: for travel use .
I recently purchased one of these an 80-A refractor from Orion.
https://www.telescope.com/Orion-ShortTu ... p/9947.uts
It's a grab-n-go refractor (my AR 152 definitely is not!) for times when I don't feel like taking out my other grab-n-go, the AWB 5.1" Newtonian.
Refractors: ES AR152 f/6.5 Achromat on Twilight II, Celestron 102mm XLT f/9.8 on Celestron Heavy Duty Alt Az mount, KOWA 90mm spotting scope
Binoculars: Celestron SkyMaster 15x70, Bushnell 10x50
Eyepieces: Various, GSO Superview, 9mm Plossl, Celestron 25mm Plossl
Camera: ZWO ASI 120
Naked Eye: Two Eyeballs
Latitude: 48.7229° N

Would you prefer 80mm or 90mm?
Is it just visual or are you doing

merci beaucoup Mme .Lady Fraktor wrote: ↑Mon Aug 23, 2021 6:13 pm As a starting point I would suggest this:

Now this is a FPL-51/ Lanthanum doublet at f/7 so I would expect there will be a small bit of CA at times when looking at the brighter objects. Nothing obtrusive, would be filterable, just pointing it out.Still a excellent visual refractor.
This one is the same size but it geared a bit more for AP side of things and uses a FPL-53/ Lanthanum doublet. At f/7 views will be CA free.

As well if you want a bit more aperture there is this offering which I reccomended to Kerry C last year and he is using for AP now.

I would not hesitate to buy a refractor from them. BTW I don't suggest this as a "travel scope".
