Brett's Carbon Star Hunt - August 2021

#1

Post by KingNothing13 »

Hello and welcome to the August 2021 Edition of "Brett's Carbon Star Hunt". July was extremely rainy here, officially I think we got close to a foot-and-a-half of rain, way more than a normal July. Hopefully things dry up a bit in August.

For those interested in Carbon Stars, more info can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_star as well as here:
https://skyandtelescope.org/observing/o ... bon-stars/

I have been pulling my targets from the Astro League's 100 Carbon Star list for their Carbon Star Observing Badge, if anyone is curious.

On with the show for this month, as always I just provide the name of the star, the magnitude range, and some info on where to find
data for it, as well as observations.

This month's targets may be slightly more challenging as far as their magnitude goes, we have a range of 7.7 up to 11.8, with two not getting brighter than 9.1 and 9.63 respectively. I hope those who go looking for them find them!

Thanks Brett.

With my telescope still put away I'll have a go at them with my binoculars. ST And looks doable from a quick look at Stellarium, if it's at a bright phase. There's a nice little asterism under it to help locate!

Regards

Graeme

Yes, thanks for the links. This month the weather has not been kind, either smoky or foggy or both. Looking forward to clearing skies in September so I will be able to track some of these carbon stars down!

Me too.

Been solid, wall-to-wall clouds this month, again.

I think we've had one "clear" night, which was even close to the New Moon - but the sky was so murky with humidity - yuck.

I managed to view S Scutum last night in my first session in quite awhile. Also looked at the Wild Duck Cluster. Fairly hot night, but at least it was clear!

Glad you got out and saw something.

Been hot and humid here for a while, and now it's cloudy again, and will be for at least most of the week. It was clear-ish for a couple of nights this past week, but the smoke from out west was over us, and I was tired due to other things, mostly dog issues, so I didn't go out.
